Lourdes began play on its spring trip on Sunday morning, dropping a pair of games at the Webber International Baseball Stadium in Babson Park, Fla. The Gray Wolves fell in the opener 2-1 against Siena Heights before dropping a 6-2 decision to host Webber International in game two.
The opener was a pitcher's duel as Jake Sperry limited the Gray Wolves to just one hit on the afternoon.
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) was nearly as good, allowing just one run and four hits in six innings of work. He did not walk a batter while striking out five.
“Frank pitched really well today,” head coach
Andy Ham stated after the games. “We need to get hits and score runs when we have men in scoring position though. That has been our problem all year.”
Lourdes jumped on top in the opening inning without a hit.
Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) was hit by a pitch and went to second on a
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) walk. A wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet and
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Gray Wolves on top.
Siena Heights (1-0) tied the game in the bottom of the third as Mike Lollo doubled home Kelly Johnson with two outs. The game remained tied at one heading into the seventh.
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) broke up the no-hitter bid by Sperry with a lead-off single and moved to second with one out but could not score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Nolan Herendeen was hit by pitch and Robbie Schwartz walked. Corey Caldwell delivered a pinch-hit single to win the game.
Sperry earned the win (1-0), going the distance, allowing just the one run and one hit while striking out two and walking six.
Ryan Veres (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing the first two runners to reach out of the bullpen in the seventh.
“Sperry kept us off balance and they played good defense,” Ham added. “Give him credit.”
Lourdes took the lead in the opening inning of game two as well.
Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) doubled with two outs and scored one batter later as Redies singled up the middle. After Webber International tied the game in the bottom of the first on a RBI groundout, the Gray Wolves retook the lead in the second when
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) reached on an error and ended up scoring on a double play ball.
The Gray Wolves maintained the lead into the sixth before the Warriors scored five times, sending 11 batters to the plate. A squeeze bunt single tied the game and a sacrifice fly put the hosts on top. Another single, a balk, and a bases loaded walk plated the final three runs.
“That inning hurt us, but we had chances earlier to break it open but didn't get the big hit,” Ham concluded.
Redies went 3-for-3 for Lourdes as part of the Gray Wolves seven-hit effort on the afternoon.
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) went 5.1 innings but suffered the loss (1-1), allowing six runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out four. Dylan Price earned the win (2-1) for Webber International, allowing just one earned run and seven hits in six innings of work.
Lourdes (2-6) will return to action on Monday evening, facing Webber International for the final game of the two-game series with the Warriors. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
