Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) with the winning run on Tuesday afternoon as Lourdes defeated Bethel (Ind.) 4-3 at Heart of Florida Stadium in Babson Park, Fla.
“It was good to finally pull out a win in a one-run game,” head coach
Andy Ham said after the game. “Cole had a great game and a great approach at the plate. He's been our most consistent hitter so far this year.”
DeCant led off the 10
th inning with a single to centerfield and stole second. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) and scored on the freshman's single to left.
The game was scoreless early as the Pilots left nine men on base in their first four at bats. Bethel broke through with a run in the fifth before Lourdes tied the game in the sixth.
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) singled and took second on a wild pitch. A DeCant sacrifice bunt moved him to third and he tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Redies.
Bethel answered with a sacrifice fly of its own in the seventh before Lourdes plated two to take the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Zach Bastien (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) led off with a walk and
Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) drew a free pass of his own.
Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Oho/James A. Garfield H.S.) drew the third free pass of the inning to load the bases and
Phil Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) tied the game after being hit by a pitch. Crooks followed with a sacrifice fly, giving Lourdes a lead it would take with it to the ninth.
The Pilots tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a two-out throwing error, forcing extra innings.
Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) started and worked five innings for a no decision for Lourdes, allowing one run while striking out five and surrendering 10 hits.
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) picked up his first collegiate win (1-0) out of the bullpen, pitching the final two innings.
“Kyle pitched very well and we got a good job out of the pen from both (Nathan) Scanlan and Olsavsky,” Ham added.
Jason Hurlock suffered the loss (0-1) for Bethel, entering the game in the ninth.
Fitzgerald finished the game 3-for-4 overall, tallying half of Lourdes six hits on the afternoon. Corey Stoner had three hits and drove in two runs for Bethel (2-4).
Lourdes (3-7) will be off on Wednesday before heading to the Warner Invitational on Thursday. The Gray Wolves will face Thomas (Ga.) at 4:30 p.m. before battling host Warner at 7:30 p.m. in Lake Wales, Fla.
