After winning the first two games of the Warner Invitational on Thursday, Lourdes found itself on the opposite end of both games on Friday, dropping an 11-3 decision to #17 Bellevue (Neb.) in the opener and a 10-4 contest to Bethel (Ind.) in the second contest.
Bellevue scored two runs in the bottom of the first before the Gray Wolves answered with a pair in the top of the second inning.
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) and
Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) had back-to-back one-out singles and
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) plated the first run with a double.
Mark Oehlers (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) tied the game at two with a ground out.
The Bruins retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second before breaking the game open with six runs in the third to build a 10-2 advantage. Bellevue added a final run in the fourth before Lourdes got one run back in the top of the fifth.
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly for the final Gray Wolves run, plating
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.), who led off the frame with a single.
Berg had the only multi-hit game for Lourdes, tallying two hits as the Gray Wolves mounted an eight-hit attack as a team. Kyle Kinman drove home five runs for Bellevue (11-4-1) to pace the Bruins.
Kody McFarland earned the win for the Bruins, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out seven.
Lee Lovejoy (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2) for Lourdes, giving up six runs, five earned, and four hits in 2.1 innings on the hill.
In game two against Bethel, the second inning proved to be the difference. Lourdes committed two errors and gave up 10 unearned runs as a team on just five hits while walking three and hitting another batter.
Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singled home a run in the third to put Lourdes on the scoreboard and the Gray Wolves added two more runs in the sixth.
Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) and Ramirez each drove home a run in the inning. Ramirez's second hit, and second RBI, of the game closed out the scoring for Lourdes in the seventh.
DeCant reached base four times in the game, going 2-for-2 with two walks while Crooks also had two hits as the Gray Wolves banged out eight in the game.
Luke Pepple earned the win for Bethel (3-7), pitching six innings allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, and seven hits while striking out six.
Nathan Scanlan (Parkersburg, W.Va./Lake [Ohio] H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs, none of which were earned, and just two hits in 1.2 innings. He walked three.
Lourdes (5-9) will conclude its spring trip on Saturday morning with one final game at the Warner Invitational.
