Lourdes baseball team opened up a four-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Davenport, 7-5 and 2-1 at the Farmers Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
On a day in which temperatures were only in the mid-30s with wind chills in the 20s, both teams committed three errors in the opener which led to several unearned runs.
Davenport struck first with two runs on four hits in the opening inning before adding an unearned tally in the second.
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) delivered a two-run double in the third, scoring
Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) and
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) to cut the Panthers lead to one.
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the fourth, scoring three times while taking advantage of all three Davenport miscues. A
Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/John A. Garfield H.S.) groundout scored
Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) with the tying run.
Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech H.S.) then reached on a two-out error allowing pinch-runner
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) to score with the go ahead run. Crooks capped the inning with a double that plated Calloway to make it 5-3 Lourdes.
A fielder's choice in the fifth allowed Davenport to pull within one and the hosts took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Two singles and a double accounted for all of the damage as the Panthers built a lead they would not relinquish.
Crooks and Dysard each had two hits for the Gray Wolves as Lourdes tallied eight total in the opener. Derek Dennis went 4-for-5 with two RBI to pace Davenport's 12-hit effort.
Corey Sessions earned the win (4-1), pitching six innings while allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five and did not walk anyone.
Nathan Scanlan (Parkersburg, W.Va./Lake [Ohio] H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1), giving up five earned runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings on the hill. He fanned three and walked two.
In game two, Davenport hurler Danny Sullivan was in control from the start. He yielded just one hit and two total base runners, tossing a complete game. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter in the win (5-3).
The Panthers scored an unearned run on a double steal attempt in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Lourdes lone run came in the fourth as Crooks reached on an error and scored two batters later on Redies RBI single to center, the lone hit in the game for the Gray Wolves.
Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) kept Lourdes in the game on the hill, going the distance while scattering just five hits. He did not walk a batter either and struck out two.
Davenport scored the game-winning run in the fifth though as a two-out triple followed by a single gave the Panthers the go-ahead tally.
Lourdes (14-24-1, 5-15-1 WHAC) and Davenport (26-12, 11-6) will wrap up their four-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon with another twinbill. The first pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at the Farmers Complex in Grand Rapids.
