Lourdes Baseball Falls to #24 Madonna

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes University's baseball team began its final homestand of the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a double-header to 24th-ranked Madonna at Mercy Field.  The Gray Wolves fell 12-4 in the opener before suffering a 6-1 setback in game number two.

Madonna took advantage of five hits in the third inning of game one to jump on top 4-0 before the Gray Wolves found the scoreboard in the fourth.  Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) doubled with two outs plating John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) to pull Lourdes within three.

After the Crusaders scored a single run in the fifth, Lourdes committed four errors in the sixth inning allowing Madonna to score four more times to build a 9-1 lead.

Lourdes tried to battle back in the fifth.  Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) reached on an error and scored on Tim DeCant's (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) triple.  Austin Gunn (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) plated DeCant with a single up the middle and eventually scored later in the inning on a double by Crooks, making it a 9-4 game.

The Crusaders added a run without a hit in the eighth and two more tallies in the ninth though to secure the victory.

Josh Vandemark earned the win (5-1) for the Crusaders, allowing just two earned runs and six hits in seven innings of work.  Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) suffered the loss (4-4), giving up eight runs, six of which were earned, and eight hits in 5.1 innings.

Gunn went 2-for-4 to pace Lourdes offense as the Gray Wolves tallied six total hits in the opener.  Lourdes also committed five errors in the field.

Game two was a pitcher's duel until late.  Madonna scored a run in the top of the second only to have the Gray Wolves answer in the bottom of the inning.  Redies, Fitzgerald, and Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) tallied three straight singles to load the bases with none out and Redies eventually scored on a double play groundout.

Madonna took the lead in the fourth on a double by Matthew Cook and took the 2-1 lead into the seventh.  The Crusaders batted around in the final frame, scoring four times on just two hits.  There were four walks in the inning in addition to an error.

Evan Piechota picked up the win (5-0), working 6.2 innings allowing just one run on five hits.  Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) suffered the loss  (2-6), giving up four earned runs and seven hits in six-plus innings.  He fanned six.

Kovar had Lourdes only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate while Cook went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Crusaders.

Lourdes (14-28-1, 5-19-1 WHAC) will wrap up the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon with the final two games of the series against Madonna (32-7, 19-1).  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field with Senior Day festivities beginning approximately 12:45 p.m.
