Lourdes Sweeps Cornerstone with Pair of Walk-offs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference sweep in program history on Friday afternoon with two final at bat victories at Mercy Field, defeating Cornerstone 7-6 and 3-2.

“This was two great wins for our program,” head coach Andy Ham said afterwards.  “I loved how we competed in both games, even when we were behind.  That's the kind of team I want to have out there playing.”

Lourdes took advantage of some wildness from Cornerstone starter Luke Heller in the opening inning of game one.  A RBI groundout by Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) plated the first run and John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) scored the second on a wild pitch.  The three-walk inning was capped off with a run-scoring hit from Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.), giving the Gray Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) and give Lourdes a 4-0 lead.

Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) had another solid outing for Lourdes, allowing just four hits over the first six innings, and took a shutout into the seventh.  The Golden Eagle bats woke up in the inning though, sending 10 batters to the plate.  A two-run by Ryan Harris tied the game and Mark Fila put Cornerstone on top with a RBI hit to right.

Lourdes immediate retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Redies.  Jex then drew a bases loaded walk to put the Gray Wolves back in front, 6-5.  A two-out single by Davis Martin in the top of the ninth though tied the game at six, setting the stage for Lourdes first of two walk-offs on the day.

Fitzgerald singled with one out and Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) was summoned from the bench with two outs.  The freshman delivered a pinch-hit double the opposite way into the rightfield corner, scoring Fitzgerald all the way from first with the winning run.

Fitzgerald was the lone Gray Wolf with two hits in the opener while Redies and Jex each had two RBI.

Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) earned the win (2-1) in relief while Daniel Marlow suffered the loss (1-2) for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap Cornerstone scored first on an opening inning single, stolen base, groundout, and wild pitch.  The lead grew to 2-0 after an unearned run in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Lourdes entered the seventh and final inning without a hit in the contest.  Pinch-hitter Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) drew a one-out walk and Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.), who ran for him, moved to second on a wild pitch.  Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) broke up the no-hitter and tied the game with a triple to the gap in left-center.  Crooks then lifted a fly ball to deep center to score DeCant with the winning run on the sacrifice fly.

Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) went the distance for the victory (2-3) in game two, scattering five hits over the seven innings and allowing just one earned run.  He walked just one and struck out three.  Jon Knapp, who came on in relief, suffered the loss (0-3).

Lourdes (11-15, 3-6 WHAC) and Cornerstone (9-16, 4-6) will wrap up the four-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for noon at Mercy Field.
