After Lourdes swept a doubleheader from Cornerstone on Friday afternoon, the Golden Eagles returned the favor on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field, downing the Gray Wolves 13-5 and 7-4.
“They cashed in on their opportunities and we didn't today,” Lourdes head coach
Andy Ham said after the twinbill. “We left too many runners on base and didn't get hits when we needed them.”
Cornerstone jumped on top quickly in the opener as Zach Harbison hit a two-run home run to left just three batters into the game. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the second on a hit by Ryan Harris before Lourdes found the scoreboard.
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) grounded out in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded to score
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.).
Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) added a sacrifice fly in the third to plate
Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) and
Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) singled home
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) to pull the Gray Wolves within one, 4-3.
A run in the fourth and two more in the fifth increased Cornerstone's advantage to three before Kovar drove home his second run of the game, doubling home Fitzgerald, who had reached on an error in the bottom of the fifth.
The Golden Eagles added an unearned run in the sixth and two more tallies in the eighth on back-to-back doubles. Fitzgerald tripled to lead off the Lourdes eighth and scored on a Kovar groundout to close out the hosts scoring while Cornerstone added three more runs in the ninth.
Redies, Fitzgerald, and Kovar each had two hits to combine for six of Lourdes' seven in the game, with Kovar driving home three runs as well. Fitzgerald scored three times.
Ryan Harris went 4-for-6 with three runs batted in to lead Cornerstone in the opener offensively as the Golden Eagles pounded out 16 hits.
Brandon Willard earned the win (2-1), allowing seven hits and four earned runs in 7.1 innings of work.
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) suffered the loss (1-4), giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of action.
Game two started out similar to the opener as Cornerstone scored three times in the top of the first. A two-run triple by Nic Covello and a groundout put the visitors on top quickly.
Redies grounded out to score
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) to get one run back in the opening inning for the Gray Wolves and an
Austin Gunn (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) groundout in the second plated
Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech H.S.) with an unearned tally.
Cornerstone (11-16, 6-6 WHAC) scored a run without a hit in the third and added another in the fourth to build a 5-2 lead before Calloway hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast to left, in the bottom half of the fourth. Redies singled in the fifth, moved to second on a groundout, and advanced to third on a balk, before scoring on a wild pitch to pull Lourdes within one, 5-4.
The Golden Eagles answered with a run in the sixth and an unearned marker in the seventh for insurance though.
Dysard was the lone Gray Wolf with two hits in game two as Lourdes has just four hit in the nightcap.
Kyle Marburger earned the win (2-0) for Cornerstone, giving up three earned runs and three hits in five innings.
Lee Lovejoy (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4), pitching 6.2 innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits.
Lourdes (11-17, 3-8) will conclude the homestand on Monday evening, hosting Siena Heights in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
