Lourdes Closes Homestand with Win over Siena Heights

Box Score
Lourdes wrapped up a five-game homestand at Mercy Field on Monday evening with a 9-6 non-conference victory over Siena Heights.  With the victory the Gray Wolves finished the homestand with a 3-2 mark.

“We did a good job of making some adjustments today,” head coach Andy Ham said.  “We drove the ball and got some two-out hits.”

Lourdes found the scoreboard first in the opening inning, taking advantage of control problems from Siena Heights starter Zach Smith.  After two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) scored on a double play groundout.  Two batters later, Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) made it 2-0 Gray Wolves with a RBI single through the right side, plating John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills, H.S.).

The Saints took advantage of three Lourdes errors, a walk, and a passed ball on a strikeout to plate three runs in the top of the third.  With just one hit in the inning Siena Heights took their first lead of the game, 3-2.

The Gray Wolves retook the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of three walks in the inning.  Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) drove home Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) with a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) gave Lourdes the lead with a two-out single scoring Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.).  Two batters later Crooks added to the advantage with a base hit up the middle scoring, putting the hosts on top 5-3.

Nathan Scanlan (Parkersburg, W. Va./Lake [Ohio] H.S.) retired nine straight Saints from the third through fifth innings before Siena Heights added a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice to cut the Lourdes lead to 5-4.

A four-run sixth inning broke the game open for the Gray Wolves.  Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) singled home DeCant with the first run of the inning and Fitzgerald followed two batters later with a hit that scored Dysard.  Kovar then delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run double to the gap in left-center, plating Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S) and Fitzgerald to increase the lead to 9-4.

Siena Heights (7-17) picked up an unearned run with two outs in the eighth inning and added another in the ninth, taking advantage of five Lourdes errors in the game.

“We need to play crisper defense,” Ham added.  “We have to stop giving teams extra opportunities.”

Scanlan earned his first collegiate win (1-1) for Lourdes, striking out nine in six innings of work.  The freshman allowed just three hits and only one earned run (four total).  Smith suffered the loss (0-1) for Siena Heights, allowing five runs and four hits in 3.2 innings.  He walked six.

“Nate Scanlan did a heck of a job,” Ham concluded.  “I'm happy for him getting his first collegiate win.”

Kovar finished the game 3-for-4 for the Gray Wolves with three runs batted in while Dysard and Berg each had two hits each.  Lourdes tallied 10 hits on the night and drew 10 walks, with every starter reaching base at least once.

Corey Caldwell went 2-for-5 for Siena Heights to pace the Saints six-hit attack.

Lourdes (12-17) will begin a 14-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle Indiana Tech.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved to Tuesday due to the weather forecast.  First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 4 p.m.
