Lourdes began a 14-game road trip on Tuesday evening dropping both ends of a doubleheader with Indiana Tech. The Gray Wolves fell 15-5 in the opener before dropping a 4-1 decision in the nightcap at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Indiana Tech jumped on top quickly in the opener, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and added another run in the third. A seven-run fourth inning, aided by a Gray Wolf error that made five of the runs unearned, pushed the Warrior lead to 14-0.
“Errors in the first game really cost us,” head coach
Andy Ham stated afterwards. “We need to make the routine plays and didn't do that.”
Lourdes scored two runs in the fifth, one on a
Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) groundout which scored
Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) and another on a wild pitch that plated
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.).
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) singled home
Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) in the sixth and Kovar added a sacrifice fly which plated
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.). Dysard then drove home
Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech H.S.) with the final Lourdes run of the game in the seventh.
Ray Calloway ended the game for the Warriors with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Kovar led Lourdes offensively with two of the team's eight hits in the contest while Ben Brudi drove home five runs for Indiana Tech and Ray Calloway had three of the Warriors' 17 hits.
Kyle Nolan earned the win (3-1), pitching five innings and allowing just two runs on four hits.
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) suffered the loss (4-2), giving up seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits in three innings of work.
Indiana Tech (22-10, 12-4 WHAC) again jumped on top in game two with a pair of runs in the opening inning and added another in the third. The Warriors added their final run in the fourth before Ramirez hit his first home run of the season for the Gray Wolves in the sixth to account for their lone run.
Cam Wilson allowed just the one run on three hits in six innings to pick up the win (3-1), walking just one and striking out two.
Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4), giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings on the hill.
“Kyle pitched well but we couldn't get hits when we needed them,” Ham added. “You have to give their kid credit. He did a good job of throwing strikes and kept us off balance throughout.”
Lourdes (12-19, 3-10) will continue its road trip this weekend with a four-game series at Concordia (Mich.). First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader in Ann Arbor, Mich. is set for 1 p.m.
