Baseball Opens Season with Two Close Losses at #23 Georgetown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Despite the season opener being delayed three extra days due to weather, the Lourdes University baseball team opened the 2014 season on Monday afternoon, dropping a pair of games to 23rd-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) 6-2 and 2-1 at Robert N. Wilson Field in Georgetown, Ky.

After surrendering a run in the opening inning of game one, Lourdes tied the game in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Tiger errors.  Jake Conkin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) reached on an error to lead off the inning, stole second, and moved to third when the throw got away from the fielder.  He then scored on a groundout by Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.).

The game stayed tied into the bottom of the fourth when Georgetown scored a pair of runs to go ahead.  The Tigers added one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to build a 6-1 lead.  Lourdes scored one final run in the seventh as Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) led off the inning with a single.  Pinch runner Cory Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.)eventually scored on a passed ball.

Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) started and suffered the loss (0-1) for Lourdes, allowing three runs and seven hits in four innings of work.  He walked three and struck out one.  Javier Saenz earned the win, allowing just one unearned run in six innings of work while scattering seven hits.

John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.), Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.), and Diaz all had two hits in the opener for Lourdes.

Game two was a pitcher's duel.  Georgetown plated a run without a hit in the opening inning for the game's only run until the seventh.  Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) worked 5.1 innings on the hill, giving up just the one run on four hits, but left without a decision.

Clay Hall, the Georgetown starter, kept Lourdes off the scoreboard until the seventh when Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Fallwell came on to run.  Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) laid down a bunt, reaching on a wild throw which allowed Fallwell to move to third.  Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) tied the game with a single to left.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the seventh though, scoring on a Gray Wolf error with two outs for the game's winning run.

Craig Ramsey earned the win for Georgetown (13-3), pitching an inning of scoreless relief, while Sean Koerber (Grosse Pointe, Mich./North H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing the unearned run in 1.1 innings of relief.  The Tigers had just five hits in game two while Lourdes managed just four.
