Lourdes University's baseball team opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich., and dropped both games of the doubleheader to Davenport 17-8 and 17-0.

Davenport scored single runs in each of the first two innings in game one before Lourdes exploded for six runs in the third. A two-run double by
Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) tied the game before
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on top with a RBI single.Â
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) tripled home two more, and later scored himself on a wild pitch.

The Panthers tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the third and added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to retake the lead, 7-4.Â
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) tallied a run-scoring double in the sixth while Fitzgerald drove home another run with a two-bagger in the seventh. Davenport scored one more run in the seventh and broke the game open with seven in the eighth to earn the win.

Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) for Lourdes in relief while Alex Schuiling posted the win in relief for the Panthers. Gray Wolf pitchers walked 11 batters while allowing 19 hits in the opener. Brenden Benner went 5-for-6 with seven runs batted in to pace Davenport in the opener. Lourdes did tally 15 hits in game one.

In the night cap, Davenport scored twice in the first and added six more in the second to take control. The Panthers scored multiple runs in every inning except the third. The Gray Wolves managed just three hits in the game against Corey Murphy, who earned the win with six scoreless innings.Â
Josh Payzant (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saint Mary's Prep H.S.) suffered the loss, working just 1.1 innings.

Lourdes (0-6, 0-2 WHAC) and Davenport (10-7, 2-0 WHAC) will wrap up their four-game weekend series on Saturday with another doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
