Northwestern Ohio Sweeps Doubleheader from Lourdes

Lourdes University took to the road for the first time in 12 games on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Lima, Ohio, where the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Northwestern Ohio 12-6 and 8-3 at Racer Field.
 
Northwestern Ohio jumped on top in the opening inning of game one with a sacrifice fly plating an unearned run.  The Racers added to the lead with five runs in the third before Lourdes cracked the scoreboard in the fourth.  Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) led off with a single and scored two batters later on a base hit by Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.).
 
After Northwestern Ohio added two more runs in the fourth, Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) singled home John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) in the fifth and Redies scored later in the inning on a balk.
 
The Racers added single runs in the fifth and sixth before Kovar delivered a two-run single in the seventh, part of a 3-for-4 game for the senior.  Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) added a sacrifice fly in the ninth for Lourdes final run of the game.
 
Kovar and Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) each had three hits games for the Gray Wolves in the opener, part of a 12-hit attack.
 
Ruben Medina (3-2) earned the win for Northwestern Ohio on the hill, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits, in five innings of work.  Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2), giving up eight runs, only one of which was earned, in 3.1 innings on the mound.  The Racers took advantage of 10 Lourdes errors in the game though, scoring just three earned runs.
 
Lourdes jumped out on top in game two as Fitzgerald delivered a RBI double to score Crooks and eventually scored on a throwing error himself, giving the Gray Wolves a 2-0 lead.
 
Northwestern Ohio (17-9, 5-1 WHAC) answered with three in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth.  Crooks added Lourdes final run with a run-scoring single to center in the fifth, plating Nick Mazgay (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.).
 
Ryan Burns earned the win (2-0) for the Racers, giving up three runs, two earned, in five innings of work while striking out six.  Sean Koerber (Grosse Pointe, Mich./North H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), giving up three runs and seven hits in 2.2 innings on the hill.
 
Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) and Fitzgerald had two hits each for the Gray Wolves, but Lourdes managed just seven hits in the contest.
 
Lourdes (3-18, 2-10) will remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Saturday's doubleheader.
