Box Score 2 Lourdes battled from behind in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader at Warriors Stadium in Fort Wayne, Ind., but was unable to pull out a victory, falling 10-6 in the opener and 8-7 in 10 innings in game two against Indiana Tech.
Indiana Tech built a 4-0 lead in the opener after scoring two runs in the third along with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Lourdes responded with five runs in the seventh to take the lead as eight of the first nine batters in the inning reached base.
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) and
Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) registered back-to-back RBI singles before Redies scored on a wild pitch to bring the deficit to within one, 4-3.
Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on top with a two-run double down the rightfield line.
The Warriors wasted little time retaking the lead, scoring six times, only two of which were earned as Indiana Tech took advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors.
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) singled home
Jake Conklin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) in the ninth for Lourdes final tally.
Toth, Kefalos, and Conklin each had two hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener as Lourdes pounded out 11 hits.
Curtis Wise earned the win (5-0) in relief for the Warriors while
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2). Only four of Indiana Tech's 10 runs were earned in the game as the Warriors took advantage of six Lourdes errors in the contest.
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) put Lourdes on top in the opening inning of game two, delivering a two-run single that plated Toth and
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.).
The Warriors tied the game with a pair of runs in the second before Lourdes answered with three runs in the third. Kefalos reached on an error that scored Toth to put the Gray Wolves on top and two batters later Ramirez launched a two-run home run to make it 5-2 Lourdes.
Indiana Tech plated one run in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth, scoring four times to build a 7-5 advantage. Again Lourdes fought back, tying the game in the sixth of the seven-inning contest.
Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) doubled home
Nick Mazgay (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.). Conklin tied the game one batter later as his single scored pinch runner
Corey Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Palos Verde H.S.).
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 10
th when, with two outs, Jacob Dunnichay doubled and Brian Hakes singled him home with the winning run.
Connor McLaughlin earned the win (2-0) with four innings of scoreless relief while
Sean Koerber (Grosse Pointe, Mich./North H.S.) suffered the loss (0-5) despite giving up just the one unearned run in 4.2 innings on the hill.
Ramirez finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs batted in while Kovar had two hits for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (8-24, 5-16 WHAC) will return to action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at DeWitt Stadium.
