UNOH Stops Lourdes Win Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes University had its four-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 7-3 and 3-2, to Northwestern Ohio at Mercy Field.

The Racers struck first in the opener, taking advantage of three walks and a wild pitch in the third inning to plate a pair of runs.  Lourdes answered in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run as Andy Kefalos' (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) two-out single plated Nick Mazgay (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.).

Two walks in the top of the sixth led to another Northwestern Ohio run while an error in the seventh allowed the Racers to open up a 4-1 lead.  The visitors tacked on what proved to be three insurance runs in the eighth before Lourdes tried to mount a late rallie.

Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) and Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) both delivered RBI singles in the inning to cut the deficit to 7-3, but the Gray Wolves stranded a pair of runners to end the threat.

Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) went 2-for-3 in the opener as Lourdes tallied just six hits.

Juan Espinosa earned the win (1-2), giving up just the one unearned run and one hit in six innings on the hill.  Tyler Eaton earned the save pitching the final three frames.  Nate Snow (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.) suffered the loss (2-2), despite giving up just three runs and three hits.  He walked six in six innings of work.

Lourdes jumped on top in game two as Ramirez delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerburg [Ohio] H.S.).  Fitzgerald, who had his hitting streak snapped at 18 games in the nightcap, had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.

Northwestern Ohio (30-14, 18-6 WHAC) responded with a pair of runs in the fifth as Alex Leach delivered a two-run double to right.  The Gray Wolvers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth without a hit.  Ramirez and Redies both walked and Cory Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.), running for Ramirez, scored from second on a fielder's choice.

The game was tied into the seventh when three walks loaded the bases with one out and Ben Schubert dropped a single into right to plate the go-ahead run.

John Schreiber picked up the win (6-1) out of the bullpen for the Racers in the nightcap, allowing one run over the final two innings.  Josh Payzant (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saint Mary's Prep H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3) for Lourdes.

Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) went 2-for-3 to account for half of the Gray Wolves' hits in the second contest.

Lourdes (12-26, 9-18) wraps up the regular season this weekend, hosting Siena Heights for a four-game series.  First pitch in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
