Box Score 2 Lourdes opened its final Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of the 2014 season on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Siena Heights at Mercy Field. The Gray Wolves fell 3-1 in the opener before rebounding for a 4-2 victory in game two.
Siena Heights jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first inning of the game, producing all of the offense the Saints would need. The visitors tallied three hits and capitalized on a walk and a hit batsman in the inning.
Lourdes responded with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first.
Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Medina H.S.) led off with a single and moved to second on an infield single by
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.).
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) followed with a RBI single to left that plated Toth. Fitzgerald had two hits in the opener.
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) and Brent Vaccaro matched each other with zeroes on the scoreboard the rest of the way, as neither team could find a way to plate another run. Shaffer went eight strong innings for the Gray Wolves, giving up seven total hits, only four of which came after the first inning, in the loss (3-3). Vaccaro earned the win (2-2) with seven innings of work, giving up eight hits while striking out three and not walking anyone. Jordan Basinger pitched the final two scoreless innings for the save.
The Saints opened game two with a run in the opening inning, and again Lourdes responded.
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) and Kefalos had back-to-back one-out doubles to tie the game at one.
Lourdes took the lead in the third when Crooks, Kefalos, and Fitzgerald loaded the bases following three straight singles.
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) bounced into a fielder's choice, but every runner was safe following a throwing error, with Crooks and Kefalos both crossing the plate.
The Gray Wolves added an insurance run in the fifth as Fitzgerald walked, stole second, and scored on a one-out hit by
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.).
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) did the rest, giving up just the one run and six total hits in five innings to earn the win (2-4). The junior southpaw walked two and struck out one.
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) picked up his fifth save despite allowing a run in the seventh.
Thomas McCarter suffered the loss (3-3) for Siena Heights, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits in 3.2 innings on the hill.
Crooks went 3-for-4 in the nightcap while scoring twice while Toth and Kefalos both had two hit games.
Lourdes (13-27, 10-19 WHAC) and Siena Heights (16-26, 5-17) will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday afternoon with another 1 p.m. doubleheader on Senior Day at Mercy Field.
