Box Score Lourdes University set a season high scoring 12 runs on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Aquinas 12-6 in a game played at DeWitt Field on the campus of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich. Due to the late start time of the contest, game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled and will not be made up.
The Gray Wolves scored the game's first 12 runs while pounding out 14 hits to snap a three-game losing skid.
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) drove home four runs and
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) had three hits to pace Lourdes.
Lourdes took the lead in the second, scoring three times, all with two outs.
Zack Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.),
Jake Conklin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.), and
Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) had three straight RBI singles in the inning.
The Gray Wolves broke the game open in the third, scoring seven times while sending 11 batters to the plate.
Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) and
Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) had run-scoring singles while Conklin plated another run when he was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-0 Lourdes. Crooks then delivered the big blow, a bases loaded triple, and he scored on an error as well.
Leading 10-0 heading into the sixth, Lourdes plated two unearned runs to complete its scoring. Toth had a RBI single and Crooks drove home another run with a sacrifice fly.
Aquinas cut the Gray Wolves' lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring six times. Five singles, two walks, and a hit batsman allowed the Saints to score all six run.
Lourdes would keep Aquinas off of the scoreboard the rest of the way though, on the way to securing the series opener.
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) earned the win (1-3), pitching 5.1 innings while allowing five runs on five hits and striking out four. Tyler Fults suffered the loss (0-3) for the Saints, giving up seven runs and seven hits in two plus innings on the hill.
Toth, Crooks, Diaz, and Conklin all had two hits each for the Gray Wolves as part of their 14-hit attack while six Lourdes hurlers combined to allow just seven Aquinas hits.
Lourdes (4-18, 3-10 WHAC) and Aquinas (10-10, 3-4) will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader at DeWitt Field. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
