Baseball Splits at Aquinas to Take Weekend Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Frank Shafer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) tossed a complete game shutout in game two on Sunday afternoon as Lourdes split a doubleheader with Aquinas at DeWitt Field on the campus of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich.  The Saints won the opener 5-4 before Lourdes rebounded with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.

Shafer scattered just three hits, walked just one, and worked around a pair of Lourdes errors to earn the complete game victory (2-2) in game two.  He worked out of a bases loaded jam in the opening inning before settling down and he eventually retired 13 of the last 14 hitters he faced.

Lourdes provided all of the offense for Shaffer in the opening inning, as the first six batters of the game all scored.  After back-to-back walks to Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) and John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) to open the game, Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) loaded the bases with a single to left.  Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) promptly cleared the bases with a double and scored himself one batter later on a Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) double.  Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) reached on an infield hit which marked the end of the day for Saints starter Phillip Holt.  Ramirez eventually scored on a wild pitch and Redies scored on a Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) sacrifice fly for the game's sixth run.

The Gray Wolves tallied just four hits the rest of the way, but with Shaffer on the hill had more than enough runs to earn the series victory from Aquinas.  Kefalos finished the game 3-for-4 while Jake Conklin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) had two hits in three at bats.

Holt suffered the loss (2-1) for Aquinas (11-11, 4-5 WHAC), giving up the six runs on four hits and left without retiring a batter.

In the opener Lourdes took the lead in the opening inning as Ramirez doubled home Crooks with two outs for the game's first run.  Fitzgerald lofted a sacrifice fly to right in the third to score Toth, making it 2-1 Gray Wolves.

Back-to-back hits in the fourth inning put the Saints on the scoreboard, but Lourdes maintained the 2-1 lead into the eighth as Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) threw four solid innings in the start, allowing just one run on five hits.  Brandon Holt (Ravenna ,Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) added three more scoreless frames to get the Gray Wolves into the eighth before Aquinas rallied.

With two outs Seth Holton delivered a two-run double to right and Justen Caudill followed with a pinch-hit two run home run to center to put the Saints on top 5-2.

Lourdes tried to rally in the ninth, scoring a pair of unearned runs, but stranded a pair of runners one run shy of tying the game.  Fitzgerald had a RBI single to score Toth and Ramirez singled home Fitzgerald before the game ended.

David Foster earned the win (1-1) in relief for Aquinas, tossing 2.2 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs.  Brendan Penny came on for the final out to earn his second save of the year.  Sean Koerber (Grosse Pointe, Mich./North H.S.) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings on the mound.

Fitzgerald finished the game 3-for-4 while Ramirez had a two-hit contest as well for the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes (5-19, 4-11) will return to the diamond on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Hillsdale.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Mercy Field.
