Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: The penultimate week of the men's soccer regular season has arrived for Lourdes and the Gray Wolves face two key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests this week. Lourdes heads to Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon before entertaining Siena Heights on Saturday evening as part of Homecoming weekend.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 6-5 (.545) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: As has been a common theme for the Gray Wolves this season, Lourdes will be meeting Aquinas and Siena Heights on the soccer pitch for the first time.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes scored a 3-0 shutout on the road at Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday afternoon behind goals from
Aaron Davis,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet, and
Carlos Viganoni.
Andre White, making his Gray Wolf debut, needed to make just one save to earn the shutout victory. Kirchoff-Sleet scored the match-winner on Saturday against Indiana Tech as Lourdes posted a 3-2 victory over the Warriors. Davis scored twice for the Gray Wolves while White made four stops to earn the victory between the posts.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints are unbeaten in their last four matches following a 2-1 victory at home over Marygrove on Saturday afternoon. Aldony Mendez leads Aquinas in scoring, having tallied four goals and three assists for 11 total points. Jacob Bedi has handed out a team-high four assists while Cameron Vela has scored three goals. In goal, Ty Vande Poel has played a majority of the time, sporting a 0.92 goals against average and an .829 save percentage.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have dropped four straight matches and are winless in their last six contests following a 5-1 setback to second-ranked Davenport on Friday evening. Siena Heights plays at Marygrove on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes. Brent Rodden leads the Saints with seven goals and five assists for 19 total points. Matt Lentine has tallied six goals while Alexandre Santos has added five goals. Matt Wilkie shares the team lead with five assists. Between the posts, Leo Hisamatsu sports a 1.93 goals against average and a .753 save percentage.
Back-to-Back Wins: Lourdes has tallied back-to-back victories for just the second time in program history and are looking for the team's first three-match win streak in program history. The Gray Wolves also won back-to-back matches Sept. 30 and Oct. 3 against Lawrence Tech and Michigan-Dearborn.
White Wins First Two Contests: Andre White made his Lourdes debut last Wednesday, logging a shutout against Concordia (Mich.). He followed that win up with another victory on Saturday, making four stops against Indiana Tech. In two matches he sports a .714 save percentage.
Davis Becomes Third Multi-Goal Scorer: Aaron Davis headed home a pair of goals on Saturday against Indiana Tech, becoming the third Gray Wolf to score two goals in a match.
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet was the first multi-goal scorer, doing so against Walsh before
Adilson Darosa accomplished the feat a week later versus Cleary.
Coming From Behind: Lourdes victory against Indiana Tech on Saturday marked the first time the Gray Wolves had won a match after surrendering the first goal. On the other hand, Lourdes is 5-1 this season when scoring the contests' first tally.
Lead in the Scoring Race: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet scored twice last week and added a pair of assists to increase his lead in the team scoring race. The junior has a team-high seven goals and four assists for 18 points through 11 matches.
Playoff Race: Entering the final two weeks, and four matches, of the regular season, Lourdes is in fifth place in the league standings with 12 points. The Gray Wolves are just one point behind fourth place Marygrove, with the top-four teams hosting quarterfinal matches in the WHAC tournament. The top eight teams earn berths in the postseason event, and the Gray Wolves hold a five-point advantage over ninth place Michigan-Dearborn. Lourdes needs just two victories to assure itself a berth in postseason play.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet ranks 11th among all NAIA schools averaging 4.64 shots per match. He also ranks 35th in the nation tallying 2.09 shots on goal per contest.
Adilson Darosa's three match-winning goals are 36th most in the country.
