Box Score For the first time in program history Lourdes University played 110 minutes and was unable to determine a winner on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves battled Aquinas to a scoreless draw at the Aquinas Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"I was really proud of our guys for playing hard all 110 minutes," head coach
Barry Spitzer said after the contest. "We had our chances, we just couldn't score. In the end we came away with a point though which is key."
Aquinas (8-3-3, 3-2-3 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 19-6 on the afternoon, including 10-1 in the second half, but could not put a shot past
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.), who made four saves in earning his third shutout of the season.
The contest was delayed late in the first half due to lightning in the area.
Lourdes played the final 50 minutes of the contest down one man following a red card in the 60
th minute. The Gray Wolves had chances though, including one in overtime in which Ty VandePoel made one of his two saves for the Saints.
The hosts also held a 12-7 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match.
With the result, Lourdes remains in fifth place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings with 13 points, one ahead of Aquinas. The Gray Wolves are three points behind Marygrove and Cornerstone for third place in the league ledger.
Lourdes (6-5-1, 4-3-1) will return home on Saturday evening to entertain Siena Heights as part of Homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
