Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 6-6-1 (.500) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: As has been a common theme for the Gray Wolves this season, Lourdes will be meeting Cornerstone and Madonna on the soccer pitch for the first time.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes and Aquinas battled for 110 minutes and waited out a lightning delay only to end in a scoreless draw in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Wednesday.Â
Jose Cedillo made four saves while earning the shutout for the Gray Wolves. On Saturday Siena Heights spoiled Lourdes Homecoming afternoon, scoring a goal in the 85th minutes in a driving rain to defeat the Gray Wolves 1-0. Cedillo made six stops between the posts for Lourdes in the setback.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles have dropped two straight matches after falling on the road last Saturday 2-0 at Marygrove. Kevin Nimmo leads the team with six goals on the year. Diego Bobadilla has the team's assist and points lead, handing out seven helpers and tallying 17 total points. Bobadilla has scored five times as well. In goal, Nick Hopkins has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.07 goals against average and an .800 save percentage. Â
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the week dropped three of their last four contests after falling 5-1 at #3 Davenport on Saturday evening. Madonna hosts Marygrove on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Amadou Cisse leads Madonna in scoring this season with five goals and 12 total points while Nick Peper has handed out a team-high four assists to go along with 10 points. Marcel Schmid leads the way between the posts, sporting a 0.94 goals against average and an .824 save percentage this season.
No Seniors This Year: With the final home match of the regular season usually comes Senior Day. However, for the Gray Wolves in this inaugural campaign, the team is void of any seniors.
Looking for a Postseason Berth: Lourdes enters the final week of the regular season looking to lock up a berth in next week's WHAC tournament. The top eight teams in the regular season qualify for postseason play, with the top four teams hosting the quarterfinals. Lourdes enters the week in a tie for sixth place in the league ledger, needing a win or a Siena Heights loss in the remaining two contests for each school to solidify extending the season. With 13 points, Lourdes is currently three points behind fourth place Cornerstone as the two schools meet on Wednesday.
A Program First: Lourdes tallied its first tie in program history last Wednesday when the Gray Wolves battled Aquinas to a scoreless draw. Only once previous this year, in the season opener at Grace Bible, had the Gray Wolves even played overtime prior to the match with the Saints.
Waiting Out a Delay: Lourdes had another first in its match at Aquinas, a lightning delay. The teams had to leave the field for approximately 45 minutes late in the first half while waiting out the storm. The event nearly duplicated itself late in the match on Saturday against Siena Heights, as heavy rains dumped on Wildcat Stadium, but lightning was never detected in the area and the teams played on.
Lead in the Scoring Race: With two matches remaining in the regular season,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet leads the team's points race by seven over
Adilson Darosa and
Aaron Davis. Kirchoff-Sleet has a team-leading 18 points, including a team-high seven goals, two more than Darosa. The junior also has handed out four assists, one more than Davis.
Cedillo Earns Third Shutout: After missing several matches due to injury,
Jose Cedillo returns between the posts last Wednesday and notched his team-leading third shutout of the year. Cedillo leads the team in minutes played, while sporting a 1.04 goals against average and an .841 save percentage.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet ranks 24th among all NAIA schools averaging 4.23 shots per match.Â
Jose Cedillo is 39th in the country making 5.29 saves per match and is 40th with his 1.04 goals against average.Â
Adilson Darosa's three match-winning goals are 45th most in the country.
Captains: Adam Gonia and
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet have been named team captains for the inaugural 2015 season.
This and That: Aaron Davis and
Adam Gonia are the lone Gray Wolves to start all 11 matches this season ... only seven players have appeared in every contest ... with his 55 shot attempts,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet has taken more than twice as many shots as any other Gray Wolf ... Lourdes has a .500 record both at home (3-3) and on the road (3-3-1).
