Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes will reach the midway point of its inaugural season on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host defending national champion Davenport. The Gray Wolves will then take to the road on Saturday afternoon, heading to Marygrove for the first of two straight contests away from home.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 4-3 (.571) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: As has been a common theme for the Gray Wolves this season, Lourdes will be meeting Davenport and Marygrove on the soccer pitch for the first time.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers have won six straight matches following a 1-0 win over Marygrove at home on Saturday. TJ Ifaturoti leads Davenport offensively, having tallied 21 points with 10 goals and an assist. Jake Love has added 14 points, scoring four times while handing out a team-leading six assists. Aaron Orban has played a majority of the minutes in goal, sporting a 1.24 goals against average and a .735 save percentage.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs had their four-match unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday, falling 1-0 at second-ranked Davenport. Abdoulie Jallow leads Marygrove in scoring with four goals and three assists to tally 11 total points while Oneil Robinson and Gbenga Ayanwale have each tallied three goals. Austin Valentine has played most of the minutes in goal, carrying a 1.29 goals against average and a .718 save percentage.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes recorded its first WHAC victory in program history on Wednesday evening, defeating Lawrence Tech 1-0 following a goal by
Aaron Davis with under five minutes remaining in the match. The Gray Wolves then notched their second straight shutout on Saturday afternoon, downing Michigan-Dearborn 3-0 on the road.
Jose Cedillo made seven saves in the win.
Cedillo Garners WHAC Honor: Jose Cedillo was named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week after logging two shutouts last week, becoming the first Gray Wolf to earn league honors in program history. Cedillo combined to make 10 saves in the two matches, and lowered his season's goals against average to 0.57 while increasing his save percentage to .900.
Buckling Down Defensively: After allowing four goals to Walsh in the second match of the season, Lourdes defense has stiffened in recent weeks. The Gray Wolves have surrendered just four goals total over the last five matches while moving over the .500 mark.
New Goal Scorers: After just four players had combined for all of the Gray Wolf goals through the first five matches of the season, two additional players got in on the act this week.
Aaron Davis tallied the match-winner against Lawrence Tech for his first collegiate tally while
Tyrell Chambers added his first college goal against Michigan-Dearborn. For Chambers, the goal also represented his first collegiate point.
Mixing Up the Lineups: Midway through the inaugural season, Lourdes has started a variety of combinations. A total of 16 different players have found their way into the starting 11, with just four players having been given the starting nod in all seven contests. A total of 21 different players have found their way onto the pitch this year.
Darosa Wins Matches: Adilson Darosa has had a flare for the dramatic with his goals this season. The junior has tallied four goals this year and three have resulted in match-winners for the Gray Wolves. His latest match-winner came on Saturday at Michigan-Dearborn when he put Lourdes on the scoreboard in the 3-0 triumph.
Controlling the Opening Stanza: Lourdes has outshot its opponents 61-37 in the first half thus far this season. The Gray Wolves have just outscored the opposition 6-4 during that time frame though, despite the shot edge, and hold just a 23-21 advantage in shots on goal.
Kirchoff-Sleet Shares the Scoring Lead: When
Adilson Darosa tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the season to open the Michigan-Dearborn match,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet made sure he did not hold the advantage long. He matched Darosa with his fourth goal of the year 45 minutes later, scoring the Gray Wolves' third goal of the match.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet ranks sixth among all NAIA schools averaging 5.29 shots per match.
Adilson Darosa's three match-winning goals are 20th most in the country, while Kirchoff-Sleet's 2.0 shots on goal per contest rank 45th. As a team, Lourdes ranks 44th nationally attempting 17.0 shots per night.
