Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Postseason soccer begins on Saturday afternoon for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves head to Detroit, Mich. to compete in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in program history. The sixth-seeded Gray Wolves will face third-seeded Marygrove.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 7-6-2 (.538) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Marygrove won the only previous meeting between the two schools, a 3-1 decision on Oct. 10, 2015 in Detroit, Mich. This is the first postseason meeting between the two schools.
Earlier This Season: Marygrove tallied two goals less than three minutes apart late in the first half on Oct. 10 on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Gray Wolves in Detroit, Mich.Â
Adilson Darosa scored the lone Gray Wolves' goal with
Aaron Davis registering the assist just 1:11 into the second half to cut the deficit in half, but Abdoulie Jallow scored less than five minutes later to add an insurance goal for the Mustangs. Andriy Pelekh and Mario Morana tallied the first two Marygrove goals.Â
Mark Darling made seven saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Aymann Youssef made four stops for the Mustangs.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Carlos Viganoni scored in the 13th minutes and
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet added an insurance tally with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as Lourdes defeated Cornerstone 2-0 on Wednesday evening in Grand Rapids, Mich.Â
Mark Darling made three saves in relief for the Gray Wolves, playing the final 83 minutes of the match. Madonna scored in the first half on Saturday evening but
Sam Miller tallied the equalizer for Lourdes with less than 10 minutes to play, helping the Gray Wolves earn a 1-1 double overtime draw with Madonna on Saturday. Darling made two stops between the posts for Lourdes.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs enter the postseason having won four straight matches and seven of their last eight overall after downing fourth-ranked Northwestern Ohio 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Abdoulie Jallow leads Marygrove with eight goals and 21 total points while Oneil Robinson and Gbenga Ayanwale have each added six goals and have 16 and 13 points respectively. Haider Alzayadi leads the Mustangs with six assists. In goal, Austin Valentine has logged the majority of the minutes and sports a .702 save percentage and a 1.32 goals against average. Ayman Youssef also has seen a great deal of action, carrying a 1.05 GAA and a .652 save percentage.
A .500 Inaugural Season: Lourdes has assured itself of finishing no worse than .500 during the team's inaugural season. The Gray Wolves enter the conference tournament 7-6-2 overall while also posting a winning mark in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at 5-4-2.
Coming From Behind for the First Time: Lourdes' draw against Madonna on Saturday marked the first result that the Gray Wolves had registered when trailing at halftime this season. Prior to the match Lourdes was 0-3 when falling behind at intermission.
Jumping Out to Leads is Key: Lourdes is 6-1 this season when scoring the first goal of the match, but just 1-5-1 when surrendering the opening goal of the contest. The Gray Wolves are also 5-1 when carrying a lead into halftime.
Sharing Time in Goal: Lourdes has had solid goalkeeping all season long from a trio of players.Â
Jose Cedillo leads the team in minutes played (by seven minutes) and sports a 1.03 goals against average and an .841 save percentage while logging three shutouts.Â
