Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play continues this week for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves play six league contests from Wednesday through Monday. The Gray Wolves will travel to Lima, Ohio for a twinbill on Wednesday before hosting Aquinas on Saturday and Monday for a pair of doubleheaders, taking Easter Sunday off.
Head Coach Andy Ham: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Andy Ham has a 43-116-1 (.272) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a head baseball coach, Ham has a 68-164-1 (.294) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Drew Lepiarz (LHP, 2-1, 2.78) and
A.J. Schraffenberger (LHP, 0-1, 3.21) will toe the rubber on Wednesday against Northwestern Ohio. On Saturday,
Frank Shaffer (RHP, 0-5, 10.45) and
Matt Olsavsky (0-1, 3.95) are scheduled to make the starts to open the Aquinas series. Lepiarz is slated to return to the hill to start game one on Monday while the other game's starter has yet to be determined.
Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio is 9-1 all-time against Lourdes in a series that dates back to March 28, 2012. The Racers are 6-0 against the Gray Wolves in Lima, Ohio. Last season, Northwestern Ohio won both games in Lima by scores of 12-6 and 8-3 before posting 7-3 and 3-2 triumphs at Mercy Field to extend the Racers winning streak to eight straight games in the series. Aquinas is 8-2 all-time against the Gray Wolves dating back to April 21, 2012. The Saints are 3-0 against Lourdes at Mercy Field. Last season Lourdes won two of three games against Aquinas in a series that was played at Cornerstone.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes held a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning of game one on Wednesday before Indiana Tech erupted for 12 runs over three innings to defeat the Gray Wolves 13-4. The Warriors scored in five of the seven innings of game two to notch an 8-1 win in the nightcap. Sixth-ranked Davenport scored 5-1 and 12-2 wins on Saturday to sweep a twinbill before downing Lourdes 16-3 on Sunday before game two was cancelled due to weather.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers have won nine consecutive games after a four-game sweep of Marygrove last weekend. Zyler Cosby leads UNOH batting .463 while Jose Cruz is hitting .458 with four home runs and 30 RBI. As a team the Racers are batting .352. Northwestern Ohio's pitching staff sports a 3.84 earned run average and opponents are batting .255 against them.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have won three straight games after sweeping Siena Heights at home last weekend. Aquinas hosts Cleary and Cornerstone in a pair of doubleheaders before heading to Lourdes on Saturday. Patrick Giddings leads the Saints batting .341 on the season while Aquinas is hitting .285 as a team on the year. The Aquinas pitching staff has posted a 6.30 earned run average while opponents are hitting .323 against their hurlers.
Scheduling Changes: Lourdes will now travel to Fort Wayne on April 15 for a doubleheader against Indiana Tech instead of playing them at Mercy Field. The change is a result of the Warriors visiting Mercy Field for a twinbill on March 25 instead. In addition, Lourdes has added a single game at Hillsdale to the schedule on April 29. Â
Lepiarz Solid on the Hill: Drew Lepiarz has had four strong starts this season for the Gray Wolves. The senior southpaw has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.78 earned run average in 22.2 innings. He has surrendered just 14 hits as opponents are batting .179 against him. Lepiarz has struck out 26 hitters as well.
More Ranked Opponents: Lourdes is 1-17 all-time against top-25 teams after dropping three games last week at #6 Davenport. The Gray Wolves lone win came on March 4, 2012 against 24th-ranked Saint Xavier 10-6. Lourdes will have two more opportunities to knock off a ranked opponent this week as they travel to Northwestern Ohio.
Streaking: Nick Toth enters the week with an nine-game hitting streak. Beginning with the second game of the March 15 twinbill against Cleary, Toth is batting .484 (15-for-31) with a .556 on base percentage. He has four doubles and has driven in seven runs during the span while posting a .613 slugging percentage. Â
More Toth: Nick Toth has five of the team's 18 multi-hit games this season and has two of Lourdes' five multi-RBI contests. Toth is hitting a team-leading .377 on the year despite missing the last four games.
Barker Swinging Well: Jonathan Barker started the season as a member of the Gray Wolves' pitching staff, but moved to the outfield and has swung a solid bat thus far. Barker has a pair of multi-hit efforts in his nine starts since March 17, and is batting .308. He has hits in six of his nine starts.
This and That: Sean Koerber has not allowed an earned run in six appearances out of the bullpen ...
Adam Dolesh and
Matt York made their collegiate debuts on Sunday against Davenport ... York registered a single in two at bats ... Lourdes has surrendered 39 unearned runs in 21 games this year ... the Gray Wolves have only outhit three opponents, earning wins in all three of those games.
