Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: Postseason play begins on Saturday evening for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves head to Adrian, Mich. to battle 12th-ranked Siena Heights in the quarterfinals of the CCLA tournament. Lourdes enters as the tournament's seventh seed while the Saints are the number two seed in the event.
Head Coach Patrick Yannarelli: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Patrick Yannarelli has a 15-9 (.625) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Siena Heights have split their two all-time meetings in a series that dates back to March 26, 2014. The Saints won the earlier meeting this season 16-9 on April 4 in a game played in Grand Rapids, Mich. that doubled as the third place game for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Last year Lourdes recorded an 11-2 victory at Siena Heights.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes used a strong second half to pull away from Oakland on Wednesday evening to score a 14-8 victory in the CCLA Central Division finale.Â
Danny Bichsel scored five times and added three assists while
Jared Yoshino also had an eight-point game with three goals and five assists. On Saturday afternoon, Lourdes late rally came up short as the Gray Wolves fell 15-13 to Aquinas at Central Catholic High School.Â
Trent Hasenfratz scored three times while
Shannen Wesley added two goals and two assists in the loss.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter the postseason having won two straight games following a 10-3 victory at Michigan-Dearborn last Sunday. Tom Kreitzer leads Siena Heights in scoring with 26 goals while Shane Lewandowski and Dan Orr share the team lead with 30 points each. Lewandowski has tallied 24 goals while Orr has 19 goals and shares the team lead with John Holowaty with 11 assists. In goal, Ryan Mailloux has posted a 5.27 goals against average and a .688 save percentage on the year.
Lourdes in Tournament Play: The Gray Wolves are 0-1 all-time in the CCLA tournament. In 2014, Lourdes suffered a 19-5 loss to fifth-ranked Grand Valley State on the road in the quarterfinals.
Final Four Heads to Pittsburgh: The four quarterfinal winners will make their way to Pittsburgh, Pa. on May 1 and 2. The semifinal contests as well as the championship game will take place at Highmark Stadium.
Lending a Helping Hand: Jared Yoshino has tallied 75 career assists, after handing out seven last week. The sophomore has 33 on the season after tallying 42 assists one year ago.
The Scoring Race: Danny Bichsel, the school's all-time scoring leader, has opened up his goal scoring lead heading into the postseason. Bichsel's 30 goals this season give him 85 over his two-year career with the Gray Wolves.Â
Dalton Vowles has added 23 goals while
Jared Yoshino has tallied 22 and
Dylan Gill has chipped in 21 this season for Lourdes as the race for second is close heading into the tournament.
Kings of Ground Balls: Dylan Gill and
Jared Yoshino have led Lourdes in ground balls over the past two seasons. Gill has 160 ground balls for his career, tallying 39 this season, second most on the squad. Yoshino leads the team this year with 59, giving him 113 ground balls over his two-year career.
This and That: Only seven players have appeared in all 10 games for the Gray Wolves this season with just
Jared Yoshino starting every contest ...
Joe Hollinger sports a 13.64 goals against average after logging a majority of the minutes in the cage this season ... Lourdes is 3-0 this season when leading at halftime ... the loss to Aquinas last Saturday was the Gray Wolves' first ever to a team not ranked in the top-25.
