Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes closes out the 2015 campaign this week with five games. On Wednesday, the Gray Wolves step out of league play for the final time, traveling to Hillsdale for a single game. On Friday and Saturday, Lourdes will meet WHAC newcomer Marygrove in a four-game series, to be played at Illitch Ballpark on the campus of Madonna University.
Head Coach Andy Ham: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Andy Ham has a 50-127-1 (.284) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a head baseball coach, Ham has a 75-181-1 (.294) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Bill Laranga (RHP, 0-0, 2.70) is the scheduled starter to take the mound on Wednesday against Hillsdale. On Friday,
A.J. Schraffenberger (LHP, 1-3, 4.57) and TBA are scheduled to make the starts to open the Marygrove series.Â
Frank Shaffer (RHP, 0-6, 6.46) is slated to take the hill to start game one on Saturday while
Matt Olsavsky (RHP, 0-4, 4.06) will close out the Marygrove series.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Hillsdale in a series dating back to April 8, 2014. The Gray Wolves won the earlier meeting this season back on March 18 4-3 at Mercy Field. Wednesday's game will mark Lourdes first appearance at Hillsdale. Lourdes and Marygrove have never met on the baseball diamond, as this is the Mustangs inaugural season for the program.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the week with a doubleheader sweep at home against Grace on Tuesday, winning the opener 7-6 before posting a 2-0 shutout in game two. The Gray Wolves' games against Northwestern Ohio were cancelled on Wednesday due to weather. Lourdes dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Cornerstone on Friday 13-7 and 6-4 before rebounding for a 13-inning 5-4 victory on Saturday. The Gray Wolves fell 3-0 in game two of Saturday's twinbill.
Scouting Hillsdale: The Chargers have dropped three of their last four games after splitting a doubleheader with Grand Valley State at home on Sunday. Vinny Delicata leads Hillsdale batting .347 on the season as the Chargers are hitting .276 on the year as a team. Hillsdale's pitching staff has posted a 5.27 earned run average this season with hitters batting .307 against their hurlers.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs have dropped 30 straight games after being swept in a four-game series by Indiana Tech last weekend. David Chung is leading the Mustangs offensively, batting .270 on the season while Chase Younkin is hitting at a .269 clip. As a team Marygrove is batting .204 while the pitching staff has posted a 9.87 earned run average. Opponents are hitting .384 against Mustang hurlers.
Location Change: This weekend's four-game series against Marygrove has been moved. Both doubleheaders will be played at Illitch Ballpark on the campus of Madonna University.
Jex is Streaking: Garrett Jex enters the week having reached base in 16 consecutive games for the Gray Wolves, the second longest streak on the team this season. Only
Andy Kefalos' 18-game streak earlier this season has been longer. The redshirt-junior has hit safely in a season's best nine straight games as well, and has raised his average up to a team-leading .318 while posting a team-best .451 on base percentage. The nine-game hitting streak is just one shy of Kefalos' 10-game stretch earlier this season, the team's longest.
Shuffling Up the Lineup: Not one player has appeared in all 45 games for the Gray Wolves this season.Â
Andy Kefalos and
Marty Ramirez lead the team with 43 games, all starts, this season while
Tyler Trame has played in 42 contests. Trame is the only other player with at least 40 starts.
A Chance to Set Wins Record: Lourdes enters the week with a chance to match or set a new single season record for victories in the season. The Gray Wolves need four triumphs to tie the 2013 team with 16 wins while posting five victories this week would establish a new mark. Winning five straight games would also set a new school mark for longest winning streak. The current mark is four set April 19-21, 2014, a four-game sweep at Cornerstone.
Winning in Extras: Lourdes 13-inning victory over Cornerstone on Saturday marked the Gray Wolves fourth extra inning game of the season. Lourdes is a perfect 4-0 in bonus baseball in 2015 after entering the season just 2-5 all-time in extra inning affairs. The 13-inning contest matched the second longest game in program history (Trine, 2014), trailing just a 17-inning game against Siena Heights on April 7, 2012.
This and That: Andy Kefalos is slugging a team-high .388 with 10 doubles on the season ... Kefalos hit the team's first home run of the season on Friday against Cornerstone ... Saturday's win against the Golden Eagles was the program's 50th in school history ...
Nick Toth leads Lourdes base runners with 10 stolen bases ... Lourdes has seven pitchers with 10 or more innings pitched that have earned run averages below 5.00 ... the Gray Wolves are 7-1 when outhitting the opposition.
