Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes looks to rebound from its first loss of the season and a postponement last week, returning to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Madonna. Lourdes then begins a four-match homestand on Saturday evening, hosting Marygrove as part of Homecoming weekend on campus.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has an 12-8-3 (.587) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: The all-time series between Lourdes and Madonna is even at 0-0-1 after the two sides battled to a 1-1 overtime draw on Oct. 31, 2015 at Wildcat Stadium.Â
Sam Miller tied the match with less than 10 minutes remaining for the Gray Wolves after Colin Wilden put Madonna in front in the first half. Marygrove holds a 2-0 series advantage over Lourdes after winning twice during the 2015 campaign, with both matches being played in Detroit, Mich. The Mustangs tallied a 3-1 win on Oct. 10 during the regular season before notching a 1-0 triumph on Nov. 7 in a WHAC tournament quarterfinal contest. Â
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes suffered its first loss of the 2016 season on Wednesday evening, falling 1-0 to Aquinas in Grand Rapids, Mich. Luke Larson scored the match's lone goal with 25:19 remaining in the second half to give the Saints the victory. On Saturday, Lourdes' match at Indiana Tech was postponed due to severe weather in the Fort Wayne, Ind. area.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter Wednesday's match following a scoreless double-overtime draw at Cornerstone on Friday evening. Madonna opened the year with eight straight victories before falling 1-0 last Wednesday to No. 7 Northwestern Ohio. Amadou Cisse leads the Crusaders in scoring, having tallied eight goals and nine assists for 25 total points. Billy Werthman has added 20 points on the year with seven goals and six helpers. Marcel Schmid has played a majority of the minutes in goal, sporting a 0.45 goals against average and an .875 save percentage.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs enter the week having fallen 4-2 at Aquinas on Saturday and play at Davenport on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Mario Morana leads Marygrove in scoring with four goals and eight points while Mike Ayanwale has added three goals and six points. Gonzalo Caceres leads the Mustangs with three assists. Austin Valentine has played nearly every minute in goal, sporting a 1.69 goals against average and a .712 save percentage.
Returning Home for Homecoming: Lourdes will return home for just the second time since Sept. 7 on Saturday against Marygrove, just in time for the annual Homecoming contest. The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned at halftime of the contest, which begins a four-match homestand for the Gray Wolves.
Reaching a Program Milestone Saturday: Saturday's match against Marygrove will mark the 25th contest all-time the Gray Wolves have played. Lourdes enters the week 12-8-3 all-time in just the program's second season. Â
Solid Goalkeeping: Lourdes has used a trio of netminders this season to produce a 0.83 goals against average and a .739 save percentage as a team.Â
Jose Cedillo has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 0.82 GAA, which has lowered his career mark to 0.91 just 14 minutes shy of 1,000 in his two years with the program.Â
Andre White carries a 1.01 GAA this year while
Christian Johnson has not surrendered a goal in his 54 minutes on the pitch.
Lots of Multi-Goal Scorers: Lourdes has had 11 different players score at least two or more goals this year.Â
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet leads the way with 10 goals, while
Demaro Fowler,
Isamnia Cohen,
Judah Goodridge, and
Kevin Omore have found the back of the net five times each.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Lourdes leads all of NAIA as a team in numerous statistical categories. The Gray Wolves have scored the most goals (52) and tallied the second most assists (37) in the nation this season. In addition, Lourdes leads the country in goals per match (7.43), assists per match (5.29), shots per match (30.43), and shots on goal per match (17.43).
Kirchoff-Sleet in the NAIA: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet is tops in the NAIA in points per match (3.71), ranks second in shots on goal per match (3.43), and fifth in shots on goal per match (1.43). In addition, the senior ranks seventh in total points (26), assists per match (0.86), 10th in total goals (10), and 15th in total assists (6).
A National Record-Setting Effort: Lourdes set a new NAIA record with its 27 goals against Great Lakes Christian on Sept. 7. The mark betters the 26 goals that Lindsey Wilson scored against Pikeville on Oct. 18, 2015. In addition, the 20 assists the Gray Wolves handed out were tied for second most in NAIA history as well. Only Texas Wesleyan (versus Dallas Christian) handed out more, recording 22 assists on Sept. 30, 2003.
Team Captain: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet is the Gray Wolves' lone captain for the 2016 season. The Lourdes senior is serving in the role for the second consecutive season.
This and That: The Gray Wolves have not allowed more than one goal in a match yet this season ... Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 212-64 this season ... the 52 goals the Gray Wolves have scored are more than the 36 they tallied the entire 2015 season ... a total of 18 different players have found the back of the net, with 20 total players registering at least one point on the year via assists ... Lourdes is now 1-0-3 all-time in overtime contests.
