Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play begins this week for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves prepare for a pair of league clashes. The Gray Wolves head to Grand Rapids, Mich. on Wednesday evening to face Aquinas before battling Michigan-Dearborn at home on Saturday afternoon.
On the Air: Saturdays game against Michigan-Dearborn will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will also re air on BCSN at 2:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Sunday. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m., and Monday at 3:30 a.m.
Head Coach Summer Quesenberry: In her first season on the Lourdes bench
Summer Quesenberry has a 0-5 (.000) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Quesenberry has a 53-73 (.421) record in her fifth season. She is the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Aquinas leads the all-time series against Lourdes 10-0 dating back to Nov. 30, 2011. The Saints won last year's meeting 64-58 in Grand Rapids and 59-45 at Tam-o-Shanter. Aquinas holds a 5-0 series edge in Grand Rapids. Lourdes and Michigan-Dearborn have split all 10 previous meetings 5-5 dating back to Jan. 14, 2012. Last year Lourdes won both contests against the Wolverines, posting a 60-45 victory at home and a 49-46 win in Dearborn. Lourdes won three of the five games played at Tam-o-Shanter all-time.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes dropped a pair of games at the Union College Classic last weekend. On Friday against host Union, the Gray Wolves were outscored 33-14 at the free throw line as the Bulldogs scored a 91-70 victory.Â
Jesse Fidler led Lourdes with 16 points and seven rebounds. On Saturday, Lourdes had a lead against #24 Milligan with under three minutes to play, but a late spurt by the Buffaloes helped fend off the upset bid in a 69-66 game.Â
Elayna Ackerman tallied 20 points while Fidler added 18 for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter conference action having won three straight games following a 71-23 victory over Calumet on Friday evening. Aquinas is wrapping up a seven-game homestand against the Gray Wolves. McKenzie Breimayer leads Aquinas in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game while Hannah Brefeld adds 10.6 points and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per outing. Aquinas is shooting 37.1% from the floor and averaging 65.1 points per game while surrendering just 52.4 points per night. The Saints lead NAIA Division II allowing opponents to shoot just 20.4% from three-point range in 2016-2017.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines enter the week having snapped a three-game losing skid on Friday evening with a 71-42 victory at Grace Bible. Michigan-Dearborn opens hosts Davenport on Wednesday to open WHAC play before heading to Lourdes. Jeorgia Jones is the only Wolverine tallying double figures, scoring 10.6 points per night while Emily Heinrich adds 9.4 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds per contest. Michigan-Dearborn is averaging 57.1 points per night and yielding 53.9 points per night defensively.
WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 1-4 all-time in WHAC openers heading into 2016-2017, and has dropped three straight games to begin conference play. The Gray Wolves' only conference-opening triumph came in 2012-2013, a 76-63 win at Lawrence Tech.
Ackerman Fills the Cylinder: Elayna Ackerman has tallied three straight double digit scoring nights after averaging 15.0 points per game last weekend at the Union College Classic. The freshman tallied a career-high with 20 points on Saturday against Milligan.
Fidler Rarely Missed: Jesse Fidler shot 65.2% from the floor last weekend, making 15-of-23 field goal attempts, including 8-of-11 (72.7%) against Milligan. The Gray Wolf junior tallied a season-high 18 points against the Buffaloes after scoring what had been a season-high 16 points on Friday against Union (Ky.).
Milestones: Jesse Fidler is 13 points shy of 700 for her career, entering the week with 687 career points.Â
Molea Thompson surpassed 400 career points on Saturday, and enters play Wednesday with 404 during her stay at Lourdes.
Blocking Shots: Taylor Geib has already blocked eight shots this season, a total that ranks 16th among all NAIA Division II players. Her 1.6 rejections per contest rank 22nd nationally. Â
Getting to the Glass: Daja Whiteside is 13th in the NAIA grabbing 4.2 offensive rebounds per game. In fact, 21 of Whiteside's 35 total caroms have come on the offensive end of the floor. The senior forward grabbed 10 total rebounds against Milligan, her second double-figure rebounding night of the young season.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Aquinas. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2016-2017 after winning the conference title 10 straight seasons.
Captains Named: Lourdes has a trio of captains heading into the 2016-2017 season.Â
Jesse Fidler is serving as a captain for her second straight season while
Sara Pribonic and
Andrea Hodge are in their first year in the leadership role.
