Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: The final four non-conference games before Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action begins takes plays this weekend as Lourdes faces Cleary in home-and-home doubleheaders. The Gray Wolves host the Cougars on Saturday before heading to Howell, Mich. for Sunday's twinbill.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 2-10 (.167) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history, and currently serving in an interim role.
Probable Starters: Lourdes rotation for this weekend's four-game weekend series is tentative.Â
Brandon Holt (RHP, 1-1, 3.52) and
Paul Avila (LHP, 1-1, 4.66) are slated to take the mound at home on Saturday against Cleary. Sunday's starters are lined up to be
A.J. Schraffenberger (LHP, 0-3, 4.30) and
Bill Laranga (RHP, 0-2, 3.14).
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cleary have split six previous contests, 3-3, dating back to March 14, 2015. The Gray Wolves won last year's series 3-1, but the Cougars downed Lourdes in both ends of a doubleheader earlier this season, 6-2, and 12-1, on Feb. 29 in Winter Haven, Fla. Lourdes holds a 3-1 series edge at Mercy Field, but the two schools will be meeting for the first time in Howell, Mich. on Friday.
Earlier This Season: Cleary jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the way to a 6-2 victory in game one of the season-opening doubleheader on Feb. 29 in Winter Haven, Fla.Â
Nick Toth had two of Lourdes' five hits in the game, while
Bill Laranga went 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs. Gunnar Gail earned the win for Cleary. In game two, the Cougars scored the game's first 12 runs on the way to a 12-1 victory. Toth had two more hits for Lourdes as
A.J. Schraffenberger allowed nine runs in 3.1 innings, but only one was earned. Payton Tyndall earned the win for Cleary while Joel Ledord was 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves picked up their first victory of the season on Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout of Goshen in their home opener before dropping game two 10-9.Â
Brandon Holt tossed a complete game, five-hit shutout while
Garrett Jex was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jex went 4-for-4 in game two as well, but Goshen scored three in the seventh for the win. On Saturday, Lourdes fell 1-0 to Marian in game one despite a two-hitter by
A.J. Schraffenberger, but bounced back for a 6-3 win in game two in eight innings. Â
Scouting Cleary: The Cougars enter the weekend having dropped a doubleheader at Mount Vernon Nazarene 10-0 and 9-1 on Tuesday. Sunday's games will be Cleary's home opener after their scheduled twinbill on Wednesday was rained out.
Jex Swinging a Hot Bat: Garrett Jex has reached base safely in seven straight games, and has four multi-hit games already this season. Jex went 4-for-4 against Goshen in game two last week and is hitting .406 on the season while slugging .625. He has seven doubles and leads the team with seven runs batted in.
Holt and Schraffenberger Go the Distance: Brandon Holt and
A.J. Schraffenberger both tossed complete games last week without allowing an earned run. Holt threw his first collegiate shutout, scattering five hits while walking just one and striking out two in a 5-0 win. Schraffenberger surrendered one unearned run in a 1-0 loss to Marian. He gave up just two hits and two walks while fanning seven.
Â
Pastor Contributes as a Freshman: George Pastor is tied for the team lead with seven runs batted in during his rookie season. He is the lone Gray Wolf to have more than one multi-RBI game this season. He is hitting .270 while starting all 12 games this season. Pastor is 8-for-16 with runners on base this season.
Looking to Avoid Miscues: Lourdes has already committed 23 errors in 12 games this season. The Gray Wolf miscues have led to 26 unearned runs this season, which account for more than one-third of the runs the Lourdes opposition has scored this season.
An Extra Inning Win: Lourdes needed eight innings to defeat Marian in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader. The Gray Wolves are now 7-7 all-time in extra inning contests. Lourdes went 4-2 in bonus baseball in 2015, but dropped two extra inning affairs during the final series of the season against Marygrove.
