Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 4-12 (.250) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history, and currently serving in an interim role.
Probable Starters: A.J Schraffenberger (LHP, 1-3, 2.91) and
Paul Avila (LHP, 1-2, 2.41) are the tentative starters for the Gray Wolves in the first doubleheader of the weekend on Friday.Â
Brandon Holt (RHP, 2-1, 2.79) and
Bill Laranga (0-3, 5.71) are tentatively slated to pitch in Saturday's twinbill.
Series Notes: Davenport leads the all-time series against Lourdes 15-0 dating back to March 24, 2012. The Panthers won all three meetings last season in Grand Rapids, Mich. by scores of 5-1, 12-2, and 16-3. Davenport has not visited Mercy Field since 2012, when the Panthers won all four contests against the Gray Wolves.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes and Cleary split a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders last weekend. On Saturday,
A.J. Schraffenberger tossed a three-hit shutout as the Gray Wolves won the opener at home 5-0.Â
Paul Avila allowed one unearned run in game two as the Cougars scored a 1-0 nine inning victory. On Sunday,
Garrett Jex and
Nick Toth both had three-hit games in the opener and
Brandon Holt earned the victory on the mound as Lourdes defeated Cleary 13-3. The Cougars bounced back in the nightcap with an 8-2 win, scoring two runs in four different innings.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers enter the weekend having won three straight games after a doubleheader sweep at Aquinas on Tuesday to open WHAC play. Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle leads Davenport batting .411 while Travis Bolin is hitting .382 with seven home runs and 23 runs batted in. As a team the Panthers are hitting .318. The Davenport pitching staff has posted a 4.21 earned run averaged and its pitchers are holding opponents to just a .257 batting average on the year.
Jex Swinging a Hot Bat: Garrett Jex has reached base safely in 10 straight games, and has six multi-hit games already this season. Jex went 6-for-12 in three games against Cleary last week and is hitting .432 on the season while slugging .636. He has nine doubles and leads the team with 10 runs batted in. He has hit safely in four straight games.
Three Solid Starts Last Weekend: Through the first three games of the weekend series against Cleary, Lourdes starting pitchers tossed 20 innings in which they allowed just one unearned run total.Â
A.J. Schraffenberger scattered three hits and struck out seven in a seven inning complete game while
Paul Avila went nine innings in an extra inning loss, giving up nine hits and striking out four.Â
Brandon Holt went the first four innings on Sunday, allowing just four hits and fanned three.
Pastor's Bat Heats Up:
George Pastor enters the weekend with the team's longest hitting streak, having hit safely in five straight contests. The freshman has raised his average to .300 and is second on the team with nine runs batted in. Pastor is batting .467 with runners in scoring position and is 4-for-4 in scoring a runner from third base with less than two outs.
Â
Dolesh Working on Getting On Base: Adam Dolesh went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in in Sunday's twinbill at Cleary, accounting for half of his hits this season. The sophomore has drawn six walks this season, which leads the Gray Wolves, and has posted a .378 on base percentage despite hitting just .214 on the year.
A Better Weekend Defensively: Lourdes had committed 23 errors in its first 12 games this season, which led to 26 unearned runs. Last weekend against Cleary, Lourdes committed just one miscue total in the four games, however, it did lead to the game-winning unearned run in game two on Saturday.
Consistency in the Leadoff Spot: Kyle Sherman has led off all 16 games for the Gray Wolves this season. He is the only Gray Wolf to bat in the same position in the order in every game this year. Sherman,
Dallas Riggs, and
George Pastor are the only three Lourdes hitters to start every game in 2016.
This and That: Lourdes has yet to lose this season when outhitting the opposition, but has yet to win a game when trailing or tied in the hits column ...
Garrett Jex has thrown 10 of 16 would-be base stealers ... Lourdes has grounded into just two double plays this season.
