Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes makes a brief stop at home on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Northwestern Ohio at Mercy Field in doubleheader action. The Gray Wolves will take to the road for the final time in the 2016 regular season on Friday and Saturday, as Lourdes heads to Cornerstone for a four-game weekend series.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 8-27 (.229) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history, and currently serving in an interim role.
Probable Starters: Phoenix Andrews (RHP, 1-0, 0.00) will take the hill in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader against Northwestern Ohio. The Gray Wolves have not announced a starter in game two at this time. In the series against Cornerstone,
Paul Avila (LHP, 1-6, 6.52) and
Bill Laranga (RHP, 1-6, 4.70) are slated to be handed the baseball on Friday while
A.J. Schraffenberger (LHP, 2-6, 4.07) and
Brandon Holt (RHP, 2-3, 2.76) will take the mound to start Saturday's twinbill.
Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio holds a 12-2 series edge over the Gray Wolves dating back to March 28, 2012. The Racers swept a doubleheader down in Lima earlier this season, winning 11-1 and 11-2 on March 30. Northwestern Ohio holds a 3-1 series edge in games played at Mercy Field. Lourdes holds a 7-5 all-time edge over Cornerstone in a series that dates back to April 5, 2013. Last season the Golden Eagles won three of four games against the Gray Wolves at Mercy Field, with Lourdes' lone win coming in 13 innings, 5-4. Lourdes is 4-0 all-time against Cornerstone in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened last week splitting a doubleheader at home against Siena Heights on Monday after snow postponed games the prior two days. The Saints won the opener 17-2, banging out 21 hits, before the Gray Wolves responded in game two with a 2-0 victory.Â
Bill Laranga earned the win, allowing just four hits in five innings. On Tuesday Lourdes managed just one hit in the opener at Aquinas, and the Saints plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a 1-0 victory. The Gray Wolves bounced back in game two as
A.J. Schraffenberger tossed a three-hitter in a 2-1 Lourdes win.Â
Phoenix Andrews tossed eight shutout innings on Wednesday in his first collegiate start as Lourdes downed Rochester (Mich.) 7-0. Madonna swept a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, 7-2 and 3-0 on Saturday and 11-0 and 6-3 on Sunday. The Crusaders tossed a no-hitter in game two on Saturday.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers have won six of their last seven games overall after taking three of four from Concordia (Mich.) last weekend. Kyle Fisher leads UNOH batting .375 with 26 runs batted in while Alex Leach is hitting .374 with five home runs. Kelvin Flores has a team-high six round-trippers for a team who's offense is hitting .327 on the year. The Racers' pitching staff sports a 3.18 earned run average and opponents are hitting just .254 against their hurlers this season.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles enter the week having won eight of their last 10 games, but are coming off of a four-game split at Siena Heights last weekend. Cornerstone hosts Davenport for a doubleheader on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Aaron Krupansky leads the Golden Eagles batting .354 with 21 runs batted in. Jacob Klemme has homered seven times and driven in 27 runs as Cornerstone is hitting .284 as a team. The Golden Eagle hurlers own a 5.40 earned run average with the opposition batting .281 against them this season.
Quite a Debut: Phoenix Andrews made his collegiate debut last Wednesday against Rochester (Mich.), and nearly went the distance. Andrews scattered just three hits over eight innings, but walked four in the 7-0 victory.
Solid Defensively: Nick Toth and
Kyle Sherman have made for a solid right side of the Gray Wolf infield. Toth has committed just two errors and has a .990 fielding percentage in 209 chances while Sherman has a .985 fielding mark with 131 chances. Sherman has just two miscues as well this year.
Among the NAIA Doubles Leaders: Garrett Jex has tallied 13 doubles in his 92 at bats this season, part of his team-leading .337 batting average. His 0.406 doubles per game ranks 20th among all NAIA hitters. Jex is slugging .478 on the year and shares the team lead with 14 runs batted in as well.
Ready to Finish at Home: After this weekend, Lourdes will return to Mercy Field to play its final 10 games of the regular season at home. The Gray Wolves are currently 4-7 at home, but have a doubleheader with Indiana Tech along with four-game series against Marygrove and Concordia (Mich.) still to contest at the friendly confines.
Need to Score First: All eight of the Gray Wolves victories this season have come when scoring the first run of the game. Lourdes has failed to rally from an early deficit in all 21 contests in which the opposition plates the game's first run.
This and That: Liam Bloom has allowed just one earned run in eight appearances out of the bullpen, spanning 9.1 innings for a 0.96 ERA ... Lourdes is hitting just .248 as a team with runners in scoring position and .115 with the bases loaded ... Lourdes is 7-1 when outhitting opponents.
