Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes plays its final two tune ups prior to conference play this week while beginning a stretch of matches in which the Gray Wolves will play five of their next six contests away from home. Lourdes heads to Cincinnati-Clermont on Wednesday afternoon before heading to Cleary for a Sunday matinee.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has an 10-7-2 (.579) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cincinnati-Clermont are meeting on the pitch for the first time ever in men's soccer on Wednesday. The Gray Wolves are 1-0 against Cleary, having defeated the Cougars 3-1 on Sept. 12, 2015 at Wildcat Stadium in the only previous meeting.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes scored five times in the first nine minutes of the match on Wednesday afternoon on the way to a 27-0 victory at home against Great Lakes Christian.Â
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet tallied five goals and had two assists while
Ryan O'Hara also recorded a hat trick.Â
Dean Bonsu and
Ian Vidalon both handed out four assists for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Cincinnati-Clermont: The Cougars are still looking for their first victory in 2016 after suffering a 6-1 setback to Cincinnati Christian on Friday evening. Randy Ervin has scored one of the two goals for Cincinnati-Clermont this season.
Scouting Cleary: The Cougars enter the week having dropped a 2-1 decision on the road at Siena Heights on Saturday evening and travel to Aquinas (Wednesday) and Bethel (Ind.) (Friday) before hosting Lourdes. Danilo Milacic leads Cleary having scored four goals and has nine total points while Noah Schneider has six points on two goals and two assists. Between the posts, Marc Hodges has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.40 goals against average and a .759 save percentage.
WHAC Honors for Kirchoff-Sleet: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet became the first Gray Wolf in program history to be named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Great Lakes Christian. He scored five goals and added two assists for 12 total points in about 13 minutes of action. Kirchoff-Sleet tallied 13 total shot attempts, nine of which were on frame.
A National Record-Setting Effort: Lourdes set a new NAIA record with its 27 goals against Great Lakes Christian last Wednesday evening. The mark betters the 26 goals that Lindsey Wilson scored against Pikeville on Oct. 18, 2015. In addition, the 20 assists the Gray Wolves handed out were tied for second most in NAIA history as well. Only Texas Wesleyan (versus Dallas Christian) handed out more, recording 22 assists on Sept. 30, 2003.
Conference Records: Lourdes set several WHAC records in the victory over Great Lakes Christian as well. In addition to the 27 goals breaking the WHAC mark of 18 set by Aquinas on Sept. 29, 1999 against Concordia (Mich.), the Gray Wolves also set a new school record with 74 points in the match, bettering Aquinas' old record of 61 set in that same match against Concordia (Mich.). Individually,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet set a new WHAC single match record with 12 points, besting Paul Legge's mark of 11 for Aquinas in the same Concordia (Mich.) contest.
School Records: All three WHAC records that were set against Great Lakes Christian obviously were new school records as well for Lourdes. In addition,
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet set a new school mark with five goals in a match while
Dean Bonsu and
Ian Vidalon tallied new records with four assists each in the contest. Kirchoff-Sleet's 13 shot attempts mark a new school record, while
Judah Goodridge's goal just 1:20 into the match was the quickest goal to ever start a game in school history. The team's 20 assists also was a new school record.
Quite the Start: Lourdes has won three straight matches for the first time in program history. The only other time the Gray Wolves have been unbeaten in three straight contests was Oct. 14-21, 2015 when Lourdes notched a 2-0-1 record during the span.
Solid Defense: While Lourdes' offense set all of the records against Great Lakes Christian, the defense was just as solid. The Gray Wolves did not allow The Lakes to fire off a shot attempt in the entire match and have allowed just 13 total in three contests.
Lots of Multi-Goal Scorers: Lourdes had nine multi-goal scorers in the win over Great Lakes Christian. In addition to five goals from
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet,
Ryan O'Hara tallied his first three collegiate markers.Â
Reece Riccardi,
Isamnia Cohen,
Tyler Sproul,
Akilla Arno,
Kevin Omore,
Demaro Fowler, and
Risaiah Osborne all had their first multi-goal efforts of their collegiate careers as well.
Team Captain: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet is the Gray Wolves' lone captain for the 2016 season. The Lourdes senior is serving in the role for the second consecutive season.
This and That: Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 133-13 this season ... the 39 goals the Gray Wolves are more than the 24 they tallied the entire 2015 season ... Lourdes is 5-3 all-time in non-conference action entering the final two non-league matches in 2016.
