Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After earning a point in the WHAC opener last Saturday at Davenport, Lourdes begins a three-match road trip this week. The Gray Wolves head to Aquinas for a Wednesday evening contest before traveling to Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon to meet the undefeated Warriors.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has an 12-7-3 (.614) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: The all-time series between Lourdes and Aquinas is even at 0-0-1 after the two sides battled to a scoreless overtime draw on Oct. 21, 2015 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Jose Cedillo made four saves to preserve the shutout as the Gray Wolves played a man down for the final 50 minutes following a red card. Lourdes holds a 1-0 series advantage over Indiana Tech after the Gray Wolves defeated the Warriors 3-2 on Oct. 17, 2015 at Wildcat Stadium.
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet scored the match-winner with 13:32 remaining while
Aaron Davis scored a pair of first half goals for Lourdes.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened WHAC play on Saturday battling third-ranked Davenport to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Wildcat Stadium.
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet put the Gray Wolves in front with a goal in the 11th minute before the Panthers tied the contest nearly 16 minutes later.
Jose Cedillo made one save and
Andre White made three stops in relief in goal.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the match winless in their last seven contests (0-4-3) following a 4-0 setback at seventh-ranked Northwestern Ohio on Saturday in the WHAC opener. Alex Detwiler and Luke Larson lead the Saints in scoring with four points. Each player has two goals as the duo have combined for four of Aquinas' five tallies on the season. In goal, Ty VandePoel has played all but 90 minutes for the Saints, logging a 1.30 goals against average and a .737 save percentage.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors remained undefeated to start the season through seven matches after a 4-3 victory at home over Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday. Indiana Tech heads to Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes on Saturday. Roman Schindler leads the Warriors with 14 points on the year, scoring a team-high six goals while adding a pair of assists. Andrew Higgins and Mitch Smith each have added 11 points, with Higgins leading the team with nine assists. Adam Viviano has played every minute in goal this year, and carries a 1.28 GAA and a .625 save percentage.
White Earns WHAC Honors: Andre White was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts on Saturday in the draw with third-ranked Davenport. White came off of the bench following an injury to starter
Jose Cedillo in the 59th minute and did not surrender a goal over the final 51:48 to preserve the 1-1 tie. White made three saves, including one huge stop late in regulation.
First Result Versus a Ranked Foe: Lourdes entered the match against Davenport 0-2 all-time against teams ranked in the NAIA top-25 poll, thus the draw was the first result the Gray Wolves have ever earned against a ranked foe. In fact, all three opponents that Lourdes has faced in program history that have been ranked have resided inside the top-10.
Adding to the Record: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet tallied his 10th goal of the season on Saturday, adding to his single season and career school records. Kirchoff-Sleet has 18 career goals now, 11 more than
Judah Goodridge's seven in second place. His 10 tallies this season are two more than his previous mark of eight that he set during last year's inaugural campaign.
Among the NAIA Leaders: Lourdes leads all of NAIA as a team in numerous statistical categories. The Gray Wolves have scored the most goals (52) and tallied the most assists (37) this season. In addition, Lourdes leads the country in goals per match (8.67), assists per match (6.17), shots per match (33.17), and shots on goal per match (19.7).
Kirchoff-Sleet in the NAIA: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet is tops in the NAIA in points per match (4.33), ranks second in shots on goal per match (3.67), and third in assists per match (1.00) and goals per match (1.67). The senior also ranks fourth in total points (26), fifth in total goals (10) and shots per match (5.33), and sixth in total assists (6).
A National Record-Setting Effort: Lourdes set a new NAIA record with its 27 goals against Great Lakes Christian on Sept. 7. The mark betters the 26 goals that Lindsey Wilson scored against Pikeville on Oct. 18, 2015. In addition, the 20 assists the Gray Wolves handed out were tied for second most in NAIA history as well. Only Texas Wesleyan (versus Dallas Christian) handed out more, recording 22 assists on Sept. 30, 2003.
Team Captain: Jake Kirchoff-Sleet is the Gray Wolves' lone captain for the 2016 season. The Lourdes senior is serving in the role for the second consecutive season.
This and That: Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 199-51 this season ... the 52 goals the Gray Wolves are more than the 36 they tallied the entire 2015 season ... a total of 18 different players have found the back of the net, with 20 total players registering at least one point on the year via assists ... Lourdes is now 1-0-3 all-time in overtime contests after the draw with Davenport.
