Games #4-6: vs. Indiana Tech (2-1, 2-1 WHAC)
Saturday, October 1, 11 a.m. EDT
Sunday, October 2, 11 a.m. EDT (DH)
Mercy Field - Toledo, Ohio
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: October baseball comes to Mercy Field this weekend as the Gray Wolves play a three-game weekend series against Indiana Tech. The schedule has been altered due to the weather, with Lourdes and Indiana Tech now playing their doubleheader on Sunday instead of Saturday.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 15-39 (.278) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history, and interim tag removed from his title during the offseason.
Probable Starters: Matt York (RHP, 0-1, 0.00) is slated to take the hill for Lourdes to open the series on Saturday.Â
Kolby Rogge (RHP, 0-1, 1.50) will be handed the ball in game one of Sunday's twinbill while
Zack Zsolcsak (RHP, 0-0, 3.00) is scheduled to start game two of the doubleheader in the series finale.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Indiana Tech have met 20 times previously, with the Warriors winning all 20 contests. Last season Indiana Tech swept all four games, posting 1-0 and 8-1 victories in Fort Wayne, Ind. before the Warriors downed the Gray Wolves 10-1 and 3-1 at Mercy Field. Indiana Tech holds a 12-0 series edge in games played at Mercy Field.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes was swept in a three-game series opening series at Davenport last Saturday and Sunday. The Panthers scored five unearned runs to build an early lead on the way to a 9-1 victory on Saturday. In Sunday's opener, a leadoff home run in the first was the difference as Davenport defeated Lourdes 1-0. In the series finale, Lourdes took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Panthers scored the final six runs to take a 6-1 victory.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors won two out of three games last weekend in the season-opening series at home against Concordia (Mich.) Indiana Tech won the opening two games 6-4 and 16-0 before falling in the finale 11-4. Matt Bandor hit .667 with two home runs and drove home four runs while Glen McClain also hit .667 with three RBI. Indiana Tech batted .404 to start the season while the pitching staff posted a 2.88 earned run average and opponents hit .263 against them.
Home Openers: Lourdes is 2-3 all-time in home openers after the Gray Wolves defeated Goshen 5-0 in the first home game during the 2016 campaign. Lourdes has never opened the season with a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game before, and this also marks the first time the home slate has begun in October. The earliest Lourdes has previously played at home during a season was March 8, 2016.
Solid Starting Pitching to Begin: Lourdes starting pitchers combined to throw 12.2 innings over the opening weekend and yielded just two earned runs, yet all three were charged with losses.Â
Matt York surrendered five unearned runs in 3.2 innings while striking out two and allowing six hits.Â
Kolby Rogge allowed a leadoff home run in the first and then scattered five hits over six innings.Â
Zack Zsolcsak surrendered just one run and two hits in his three innings on the hill in the finale.
Crabtree Off to Solid Start: Glen Crabtree was the only Gray Wolf to hit safely in all three games during the opening weekend. The Gray Wolf sophomore went 4-for-9 with a double and was hit by a pitch to post a .444 batting average and a .500 on base percentage.
Pastor Reaches in All Three Games: George Pastor also reached base in all three contests for the Gray Wolves at Davenport. The sophomore had four hits in 11 at bats and scored one of Lourdes' two runs on the weekend. He also drew a walk and had a stolen base while logging a .417 on base percentage.
Offense Still Missing: Lourdes struggled offensively during the 2016 season, as the Gray Wolves batted just .224 as a team in 2016 while scoring just 144 runs (2.8 per game). Over the first three games this year, the Gray Wolves hit just .200 while crossing home plate just twice.
Errors Prove Costly: Lourdes committed just three errors in the three games to open the season last weekend, however the Gray Wolves found out how costly miscues could be. Both errors in the opener combined to lead to five unearned runs. Lourdes cleaned things up on Sunday, committing just one miscue, but it also led to an unearned tally.
A New Look to the WHAC: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has several new looks as the new season begins. For the first time ever, fall baseball has come to the WHAC. Each member school will play three regular season three-game series which will count toward the year-end record. In addition, each conference series has been shortened from four games to three this year, but all three contests will be scheduled for nine innings. Finally, there are two new additions to WHAC baseball. Lawrence Tech is playing baseball on campus for the first time while Rochester (Mich.) joins the conference as an affiliate member for baseball only.
This and That: Four doubles were the only extra bases hits Lourdes registered in the first three games ...
Dan Johnson threw out four would-be base stealers last weekend ... Lourdes is 8-8 all-time in extra inning contests.
