Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes plays its final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, hosting Taylor at Mercy Field. The Gray Wolves then take to the road over the weekend for the final time in 2017, traveling to Rochester (Mich.) for a three-game WHAC series.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 23-67 (.256) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history, and interim tag removed from his title during the offseason.
Probable Starters: Lourdes has yet to announce its starters for Wednesday's doubleheader against Taylor. The Gray Wolves plan to send
Zach Brown (RHP, 0-2, 5.79) to the hill in the series opener on Saturday against Rochester (Mich.).Â
Matt York (RHP, 1-6, 7.33) and
Colin Gottschalk (RHP, 1-1, 7.43) are tentatively slated to start Sunday's twinbill against the Warriors.
Series Notes: Taylor leads the all-time series against Lourdes 3-1 dating back to Feb. 14, 2013. The two teams last met on March 17, 2015, when the Trojans swept a doubleheader from the Gray Wolves 12-2 and 11-4. All four previous games have been played in Upland, Ind. Rochester (Mich.) holds a 7-3 series edge over Lourdes dating back to March 18, 2012. Last year the Gray Wolves shutout the Warriors 7-0 at Mercy Field. The teams split the lone doubleheader played in Rochester Hills, Mich. back in 2012.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Aquinas recorded three shutouts against Lourdes last weekend in sweeping a WHAC series. The Saints won Saturday's doubleheader 10-0 and 3-0. In the opener
George Pastor had two hits while
Dallas Riggs and
Cameron Gallo each had two hits in the nightcap. On Sunday the Saints scored eight times in the first on the way to recording a 16-0 victory.Â
Jonathan Barker and
Devin Stanley each had two hits in the loss for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Taylor: The Trojans have dropped three straight games after being swept in their weekend series at home against Huntington last weekend. Nathan Targgart leads Taylor batting .414 with six home runs and 50 runs batted in. Jared Adkins has homered 11 times, driven home 40, and is batting at a .320 clip. As a team the Trojans are hitting .324 on the year. The Taylor pitching staff sports a 5.26 earned run average and opponents are hitting .289 against them. Rob Fox leads the way with a 2.93 earned run average out of the bullpen while Logan Rodgers is 7-2 overall.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors have dropped three straight games after being swept in a road series at Davenport last weekend. Chad Cook leads the way offensively for Rochester, batting .361, while Kyle Hartwick has hit four home runs and driven in a team-high 22 runs. As a team the Warriors are batting .251 while the pitching staff sports a 10.61 earned run average. Mike Berlin leads the pitching staff with a 2-4 record and a 5.09 ERA.
Stanley Keeps on Hitting: Devin Stanley continues to lead the way offensively for Lourdes, batting .358 on the season. He has been even better in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, swinging at a .375 clip with 12 runs batted in. In league play Stanley has registered a .446 on base percentage, and has not committed an error defensively. Last week in two games against Goshen and three against Aquinas Stanley batted .429 with two doubles.
Offense Struggled over the Weekend: Lourdes failed to score a run in three games at Aquinas, tallying just 16 total hits against the Saints. The series marked the first time in program history that the Gray Wolves had been blanked in three consecutive games. Â
Final Road Series: Lourdes concludes the road portion of its schedule over the weekend with the trip to Rochester (Mich.). The Gray Wolves are 3-15 in true road games this season, but snapped a seven-game losing skid last Monday (April 17) at Goshen.
Pinch-Hitting Success: Lourdes batters are hitting .419 in pinch-hitting situations this season (18-for-43).Â
Zach Brown has produced when called upon off of the bench, going a perfect 6-for-6 in pinch-hitting opportunities on the year.Â
Cameron Gallo is 4-for-6 when his number has been called late in games while
Zak Laubscher also has a pair of pinch hits.
Defensively Sound: Lourdes is having its finest defensive season in program history this year, fielding at a .956 clip. The Gray Wolves' previous best was .951 during the 2016 campaign. This year Lourdes has committed just 61 errors in 39 games.
Pulling Double Duty: Jay Denman has been busy as a freshman, playing both golf and baseball for the Gray Wolves. The rookie has batted .280 in 29 games on the diamond with a home run and seven runs batted in. He leads the team with a .443 on base percentage after drawing 20 walks on the year. On the golf course, Denman has posted an 79.94 stroke average playing in all 14 events. On Monday and Tuesday he competed in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship on the links, firing a final round 73 to finish the tournament at 244 for 18 holes.
