Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: Lourdes begins play at the NAIA National Invitational on Wednesday morning against a familiar opponent, as the Gray Wolves face conference foe Indiana Tech in the quarterfinal round. The Gray Wolves enter play ranked third nationally while the Warriors are ranked sixth.
Head Coach Patrick Yannarelli: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
Patrick Yannarelli has a 43-17 (.717) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Yannarelli was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 2016. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-1 all-time against Indiana Tech dating back to March 23, 2016. This will be the first time the two schools have met on a neutral field, as the home team has won each of the first three contests. Earlier this season Indiana Tech defeated the Gray Wolves in Fort Wayne, Ind. 14-7 on March 29.
Wrapping Up Last Week: It took two venues and a lightning delay, but Lourdes defeated Lawrence Tech 18-11 on April 19 in the WHAC semifinals. Jared Yoshino scored five times and
Drew Gilhooly added four more goals in the win. The Gray Wolves then downed Aquinas 13-6 on April 22 at home in the WHAC Championship. Leading 4-3 at halftime, Lourdes outscored the Saints 9-3 over the final 30 minutes. Yoshino had four goals for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors lost in overtime, 18-17, to Aquinas at home in the WHAC semifinals in the team's latest outing. Will McKinney and Jace Childs lead the way with 65 goals each for Indiana Tech, with McKinney having a team-high 93 points. Noah Puckett is the team's assist leader with 36 while in goal Joe Dosen has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 13.29 goals against average and a .441 save percentage.
Lourdes in the NAIA National Invitational: The Gray Wolves are participating in the NAIA National Invitational for the second straight season. In 2016, Lourdes defeated Missouri Baptist 15-9 in the quarterfinals before falling 23-11 to Davenport in the national semifinals. Lourdes was the fourth seed one year ago.
WHAC Honors: Ben LaPointe,
Dalton Vowles, and
Jared Yoshino all earned First Team All-WHAC honors this season. In addition,
Casey Hilfinger was named to the All-WHAC Second Team.
Yoshino Becomes Career Goals Leader: Jared Yoshino has set all of the Lourdes' career scoring records during his four years. Yoshino enters the NAIA National Invitational with 181 goals in four years while also holding the assist (173) and points (354) record at the school.
Early Leads Key: Lourdes has not lost a game this season when taking a lead into intermission (12-0), but has also yet to overcome a halftime deficit (0-2).
Among the Nation's Leaders: As a team Lourdes ranks seventh in NAIA averaging 13.50 goals per game. The Gray Wolves are also eighth in shots on goal per contest (23.64) and 10th in shots per game (38.07). Individually,
Jared Yoshino is seventh in points per game at 5.71 and eighth in goals per game as well as assists per game at 3.64 and 2.07 respectively.
This and That: Nic Mueller is the lone Gray Wolves to start all 14 games this season ... Yoshino has a team-high five game-winning goals ... 19 different players have at least one point on the year ... Lourdes is currently on its second six-game winning streak of the season.
