Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes University opens its third season of men's soccer on Monday evening as the Gray Wolves welcome Indiana East to Wildcat Stadium in non-conference action. The first of five non-league contests to begin the year, it is also one of eight home matches on the Gray Wolves' schedule in 2017.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 13-16-3 (.453) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Indiana East are meeting on the pitch in men's soccer for the first time ever.
Wrapping Up 2016: Lourdes finished the 2016 season with a 6-9-1 record overall. The Gray Wolves finished in 11th place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference with a 1-9-1 mark. Lourdes did not qualify for the WHAC tournament.
Scouting Indiana East: The Red Wolves opened their season on Wednesday evening, suffering a 6-0 setback at Huntington. Indiana East also travels to Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday before heading to Lourdes. This is the inaugural season for Indiana East in men's soccer. Michael Hall and Nick Valentine each had two shots, both on goal, for the Wolves in their opener while Josh Powell made six saves in goal.
Lourdes in Openers: Lourdes is undefeated in season openers during the program's first two seasons.  In 2015, the Gray Wolves earned a 3-2 overtime victory on the road at Grace Bible in the program's inaugural match. Last year, Lourdes earned a 3-1 triumph over Grace Bible at Wildcat Stadium, the first of five straight victories to begin the season.
Home Openers: The Gray Wolves are 1-1 all-time in home openers at Wildcat Stadium since the program began in 2015.  Lourdes defeated Grace Bible 3-1 to open the home season last year but suffered a 4-3 setback to Walsh in the program's home debut in 2015.
Returning Scoring Leaders: Judah Goodridge and
Akilla Arno are the Gray Wolves' top returning scorers from one season ago. Goodridge tallied six goals in 2016, and ranks second all-time at Lourdes with eight career tallies. Goodridge finished the year with 13 total points and is second all time with 19 for his career. Arno added four goals and two assists for 10 points in 2016, and is tied for second all-time with five career helpers.
Solid in Goal: Jose Cedillo started 14 of the 16 matches for the Gray Wolves last season, posting a 2.06 goals against average and a .676 save percentage. He enters his final season at Lourdes with a 1.64 career GAA and a .737 save percentage along with four shutouts during his stay with the Gray Wolves.
Experience Returning: Akilla Arno enters the season having appeared in 32 career matches, tied for most in the program's history.Â
Judah Goodridge has made 30 appearances wearing the terra cotta and black, while
Jose Cedillo (23 matches) and
Riley Hogan (21 matches) have each seen the pitch more than 20 times in their career entering 2017.
Several New Faces: Lourdes has six newcomers in its program this season.Â
Jared Kidder,
Olawole Ogunsanya, and Jose Silviera are all true freshmen while
Ceasar Liadi,
Nitram Senderos, and
Pablo Vinuesa Berchetti arrive at Lourdes as transfer student-athletes.
Looking to Replace Record Holder:
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet graduated following the 2016 season as the school's all-time scoring leader. He tallied 21 goals and added 10 assists for 52 career points in two seasons with the Gray Wolves, and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection as a senior. He was involved in (either scoring or assisting) 35.6% of Lourdes' goals thus far in program history.
Captains: The Gray Wolves have not announced their team captains yet, but will select them prior to Monday's game with Indiana East.
This and That: Lourdes is 6-7-2 all-time in home matches at Wildcat Stadium ... the Gray Wolves are unbeaten in overtime, posting a 1-0-3 mark of their first two seasons ... Lourdes has recorded seven shutouts all-time in program history ... last year the Gray Wolves set a program record scoring 27 goals against Great Lakes Christian.
