Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After beginning the season on Monday with a 1-1 draw, Lourdes University wraps up its season-opening homestand on Saturday night, hosting Cleary at Wildcat Stadium. The Gray Wolves will then take to the road for a pair of matches before returning home on Sept. 17 to close out non-conference play.
Head Coach Barry Spitzer: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
Barry Spitzer has a 13-16-4 (.455) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a men's soccer collegiate head coach at four year programs. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Cleary in a series that dates back to Sept. 12, 2015. The Gray Wolves won the initial meeting, played at Wildcat Stadium, 3-1, before defeating Cleary 2-1 last season in a match played in Howell, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the season on Monday with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Indiana East in the Gray Wolves' season opener.Â
Haggi Amirally put the Gray Wolves in front in the 38th minute, heading in a corner kick from
Orlando Gomez. The Red Wolves tied the match in the 63rd minute, and neither team would score again.Â
Jose Cedillo made six saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Cleary: The Cougars recorded their first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Aquinas 1-0 in overtime at home. Brian Osinde scored the goal for Cleary, the only one the team has tallied thus far this season, while Noah Schneider garnered the assist. Marc Hodges has played every minute in goal thus far this year, and sports a 1.95 goals against average along with a .667 save percentage.
Amirally Finds the Back of the Net: Haggi Amirally's goal against Indiana East was the first of the year for the Gray Wolves. For Amirally, it was the second of his career, with his only other tally coming on Sept. 7, 2016 in the win over Great Lakes Christian.
Gomez Moves Up Assist Chart: Orlando Gomez was credited with the assist on Haggi Amrially's goal against the Red Wolves on Monday, his first of the season. The senior had three helpers last year, giving him four for his career at Lourdes, and moves him into a tie with
Dean Bonsu (2015-2016) for sixth on the Gray Wolves' career assists list.
A Program First: This season marks the first time in program history that Lourdes opens the year with two consecutive home matches. Â
Nearing the Century Mark: Jose Cedillo is the Gray Wolves' career saves leader, and added to his total on Monday with six stops between the posts. He enters the weekend with 93 career saves, and is well on his way to becoming the first Lourdes goalkeeper to reach the century mark.
Welcome Back Adilson: After sitting out last season as a redshirt, fifth-year senior
Adilson Darosa returned to the Gray Wolves' lineup on Monday. He came off of the bench for his 17th appearance in a Lourdes uniform, while it was his third match appearing in a reserve role.
Shot Leaders: Lourdes outshot Indiana East 16-14 in the opening match of the season, but the Red Wolves held a 7-4 advantage on goal.Â
Reece Riccardi and
Tyler Rogers led the way with five shot attempts each, but only one was on goal for each player. Riccardi entered the match with just 10 career shot attempts while Rogers had even fewer, shooting just seven times last year as a rookie.
New Faces Take to the Field: Lourdes had four players make their Gray Wolf debuts in the season opener.Â
Ceasar Liadi drew a starting assignment in his first appearance wearing the terra cotta and black.Â
Olawole Ogunsanya,
Jared Kidder, and
Jose Silveira all came off the bench in reserve roles in their collegiate debuts. Â
Remaining Unbeaten in Overtime: The double overtime contest against Indiana East marked the fifth time in program history the Gray Wolves have played beyond 90 minutes. Lourdes has never lost in a golden goal situation, posting a 0-4-1 record in such situations. The Gray Wolves have tied their last four overtime matches all-time, with the most recent prior to Monday taking place on Sept. 24, 2016 against third-ranked Davenport. That match was also a 1-1 tie.
Captains: Jose Cedillo and
Judah Goodridge have been named the Lourdes captains for the 2017 season. Both are serving in the leadership role for the first time in their careers.
This and That: Lourdes is 6-7-3 all-time in home matches at Wildcat Stadium ...the Gray Wolves played the final three minutes of regulation and all of overtime with the man advantage following an Indiana East red card on Monday ... Lourdes has recorded seven shutouts all-time in program history ... last year the Gray Wolves set a program record scoring 27 goals against Great Lakes Christian.
