Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: The 2018 baseball season starts early for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this weekend.  Lourdes hosts the University of Michigan-Dearborn, a first year baseball program, in a three-game series at Mercy Field.

Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his third season on the Lourdes bench, Jeremy Snow has a 26-71 (.268) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach.  He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history,.

Probable Starters: Lourdes expects to hand the baseball to Zach Brown (RHP, 1-3, 5.40 in 2017) on Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader.  Game two's probable will be newcomer Braxton McKart (RHP, Macomb CC in 2017).  Matt York (RHP, 1-6, 8.00 in 2017) is expected to toe the rubber on Sunday in the series finale.

Series Notes: Lourdes and Michigan-Dearborn are meeting on the diamond for the first time in history this weekend.

Wrapping Up Last Season: Lourdes finished the 2017 campaign 11-35 overall and 7-25 in the WHAC, finishing in ninth place.  The Gray Wolves finished the season strong, winning three of their final five contests.  Devin Stanley led the team batting .368 while Dallas Riggs had three home runs and drove home 34 runs.  On the hill, Mike Vomastek led the team with a 4.34 earned run average while Kolby Rogge had a team-leading three victories.  Glen Crabtree was named to the WHAC Gold Glove Team for his efforts defensively at third base.

Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines will be playing their first three games in program history this weekend when they visit Mercy Field.  UM-Dearborn announced the addition of the sport on June 13, 2016.

Some Changes in the WHAC: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has several new looks as the new season begins.  Michigan-Dearborn has added baseball for the first time in school history, while Rochester (Mich.), which played as an affiliate member last season, is a full-fledged member this year.  In addition, Davenport has departed the WHAC and Marygrove is no longer sponsoring baseball.  For the second straight year, fall baseball has come to the WHAC.  Each member school will play either two or three regular season three-game series which will count toward the year-end record.  Finally, the WHAC tournament will have a new format, with two three-team pools competing for the right to play in a best-of-three championship series.  The top six schools in the final regular season standings will again qualify for the postseason event.

Lourdes in Season Openers: The Gray Wolves are 1-5 all-time in season openers with the lone victory coming Feb. 14, 2013 at Taylor.  Lourdes played on the road in the season opener in five of its first six seasons, with a lone neutral site game against Cleary to open up the 2016 campaign.  This season marks the first time the Gray Wolves have ever opened the slate at home.

Conference Openers: Lourdes is looking for a win in its WHAC opener for the first time, going 0-6 all-time in such games.  The Gray Wolves faced Davenport in the WHAC opener in four of the six seasons, including last year when Lourdes suffered a 9-1 loss on the road.

Crabtree Earned Gold Glove Honors: Glen Crabtree earned WHAC Gold Glove honors as a third baseman last season for the Gray Wolves.  In his sophomore season at Lourdes, Crabtree committed just five errors in 129 chances at the hot corner, recording a .961 fielding percentage.  He was also involved in six double plays.

Looking to Continue Offensive Improvement: Lourdes will look to continue swinging a hot bat as the new season begins.  The Gray Wolves batted .267 last year, an increase of 43 points offensively from the 2015 team that batted just .224.  The Gray Wolves return their top seven hitters from one year ago in terms of average.  Devin Stanley (.368), Cameron Gallo (.330), and Dallas Riggs (.321) all topped the .300 mark while Glen Crabtree hit 296 for the season.

Senior Leadership: Lourdes has just four seniors on its roster this season after graduating 10 seniors from the class of 2017.  Catcher Dan Johnson, outfielder Dallas Riggs, infielder Daniel Kruzel, and right-handed pitcher Matt York are the only members of the Gray Wolf program who will have exhausted their eligibility when the season concludes in May.

Lots of New Faces: Lourdes enters the season with 11 players on its roster that are new to the Gray Wolf baseball program.  Head coach Jeremy Snow added 10 freshmen along with sophomore pitcher Braxton McKart to the roster for the upcoming campaign.

This and That: Lourdes is 78-194-1 all-time entering its seventh season of baseball .. the Gray Wolves are 41-140-1 in WHAC play and 35-86 at Mercy Field all-time ... Lourdes is 9-10 in extra inning contests ... the Gray Wolves enters the season on a two-game losing skid after being swept in a doubleheader at Cornerstone to close last season.
