Lourdes Hosts Spring Arbor to Open Baseball Season

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: The 2019 baseball season starts early for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves play a four-game fall non-conference series against Spring Arbor.  Lourdes will host the Cougars in doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday before taking four months off for the winter and resuming the season in February.

Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his third season on the Lourdes bench, Jeremy Snow has a 48-94 (.338) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach.  He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history,.

Probable Starters: Lourdes expects to hand the baseball to Zach Brown (RHP, 2-4, 6.53 in 2018) on Friday in the first game of the doubleheader.  Game two's probable will be newcomer Santos Catanzarite (RHP, Glen Oaks CC in 2018).  Freshman Max Lojko (RHP) is expected to toe the rubber for Saturday's first game while fellow rookie Spencer Rader (RHP) will pitch in the series finale.

Series Notes: Lourdes won the only previous meeting against Spring Arbor, 12-6, during spring break last season in a game played in Lake Wales, Fla.  This will mark the first meeting between the two schools on one of the two campuses.

Wrapping Up 2018: Lourdes finished the 2018 campaign 22-23 overall and 13-15 in the WHAC, finishing in sixth place.  The Gray Wolves set a school record for victories while qualifying for the WHAC tournament for the first time in program history.  Jay Denman led the Gray Wolves offensively with a .410 batting average with seven home runs and 28 runs batted in as Lourdes hit .305 as a team.  Braxton McKart went 6-1 on the mound while Liam Bloom had a 4.54 earned run average on a staff that posted a 6.00 ERA.

Scouting Spring Arbor: The Cougars have already played a pair of doubleheaders, splitting twinbills with Olivet and Michigan-Dearborn.  Spring Arbor is batting .340 as a team, with Duncan Patterson hitting .600 with five runs batted in.  The pitching staff sports a 5.00 earned run average, with Duncan Patterson making two starts, posting a 1-1 record and a 3.21 ERA.

Some Changes in the WHAC: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has several new looks as the new season begins.  Cleary has joined the league as a full-time member, increasing the number of teams in the WHAC to 12.  In addition, each member school will now play just one regular season doubleheader against each of the other schools.  Finally, after two seasons of playing fall league games, conference play will not begin until the spring.  Teams are permitted to play non-conference games during the fall, as Lourdes is doing with Spring Arbor.  

Lourdes in Season Openers: The Gray Wolves are 2-5 all-time in season openers, snapping a four-game losing streak to begin seasons with a 13-3 victory over Michigan-Dearborn last year.  The only other victory came on Feb. 14, 2013 at Taylor.  Last season marked the only other time Lourdes has begun a season at home.

Home Openers: Lourdes is 3-4 all-time in the Gray Wolves' home opener after defeating Michigan-Dearborn 13-3 to begin last season.  Lourdes also won its home openers in 2013 (Goshen, 3-1) and 2016 (Goshen, 5-0).

Playing Fall Ball: Lourdes is 4-11 all-time in countable fall games.  Last year the Gray Wolves went 3-3 after sweeping a series against Michigan-Dearborn and dropping three contests at Indiana Tech.  In the fall of 2017 to open the 2018 campaign, Lourdes went 1-8, being swept by Davenport and Indiana Tech and winning one of three at Marygrove.

Last Year's Award Winners: Jay Denman became the school's first First Team All-WHAC selection, earning the honor as an outfielder.  Denman batted .410 with 51 runs scored, 15 doubles, seven home runs, 28 runs batted in, 28 walks, nine stolen bases, a .511 on base percentage, and a .688 slugging percentage.  George Pastor was named Second Team All-WHAC as a shortstop.  He hit .345 with 20 runs scored, 11 doubles, 31 RBI, 17 walks, a .518 slugging percentage, and a .400 on base percentage.

Streaking: Michael Davis enters the new season carrying a 10-game on base streak.  Cameron Gallo has reached base in each of his last eight games, while Jay Denman has the longest active hitting streak at four.

Lots of New Faces: Lourdes enters the season with 17 players on its roster that are new to the Gray Wolf baseball program.  Head coach Jeremy Snow added 13 freshmen along with three transfers to the roster for the upcoming campaign.  In addition, former track and field athlete Demetri Carbonell has joined the roster.

This and That: Lourdes is 100-217-1 all-time entering its eighth season of baseball .. the Gray Wolves are 47-92 at Mercy Field all-time ... Lourdes is 11-12 in extra inning contests ... the Gray Wolves enter the season on a two-game losing skid after falling to Madonna and Northwestern Ohio in the WHAC tournament ... the Gray Wolves will return to the diamond after this weekend on Feb. 23-24 hosting Saint Xavier in a four-game series.
