Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: After three consecutive home games, Lourdes returns to the road for a pair of contests this week, looking to snap a two-game losing skid. The Gray Wolves head to Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday afternoon before traveling to Aquinas for a Saturday matinee.
Head Coach Patrick Yannarelli: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench,
Patrick Yannarelli has a 49-22 (.690) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Yannarelli was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 2016. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Concordia (Mich.) have met just once in program history, a 19-4 victory by the Gray Wolves at Wildcat Stadium on March 22, 2017. This is the Gray Wolves' first trip to Ann Arbor. Lourdes holds a 4-1 series advantage against Aquinas dating back to March 29, 2014. Last season the Gray Wolves downed the Saints 10-7 during the regular season and 13-6 in the WHAC Championship, with both games played at Wildcat Stadium. Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Aquinas in Grand Rapids, Mich. as well.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes rallied from four goals down entering the fourth quarter to pull within one, but came up just short on Wednesday evening in a 12-11 setback to second-ranked Madonna.
Casey Hilfinger scored five times while
D.J. Harris handed out three assists.
Jared Huiskens made 17 saves in the setback. On Saturday, Lourdes was within a goal of third-ranked Indiana Tech with a minute to play before suffering a 14-11 loss to the Warriors.
Greg Johanning had three goals and two assists while Mary O'Bryant also found the back of the cage three times. Huiskens made six saves for Lourdes.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have dropped three straight games heading into Wednesday's contest after falling 18-5 at Aquinas on Saturday. Devin Wolever leads Concordia with 23 goals and 13 assists for 35 total points. Oliver Niedzwiecki has added 16 goals and 24 points while Blake Blaisdell has 23 points, including 13 assists. Taner Ludeman and Kendrik Scherer have split time in goal, with Ludeman sporting a 12.70 goals against average and a .541 save percentage while Scherer has a 14.65 GAA and a .448 save mark.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints snapped their two-game losing skid on Saturday with an 18-5 win over Concordia (Mich.). Aquinas heads to Michigan-Dearborn before hosting Lourdes Saturday. Sam Klinsky leads the Saints with 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 total points while Walker West has added 22 goals and Jon Jardis has 23 assists. Jacob Mackinder has played a majority of the minutes in goal, and has a 9.10 goals against average and a .552 save percentage.
More Ranked Foes: When Lourdes faces 10th-ranked Aquinas on Saturday, it will mark the fourth NAIA top-10 opponent the Gray Wolves will have faced in a six-game span overall. Lourdes is 1-3 against ranked teams, with a 6-5 win over number six Cumberlands.
Solid in Goal: Jared Huiskens has played all but 18 minutes between the posts this year for Lourdes. He currently is on pace to set the single season marks for both goals against average and save percentage. He enters the week with a 6.76 GAA and a .587 save mark.
Offense Shines Late: Lourdes has outscored the opposition 38-16 in the final quarter this season. Despite the losses to Madonna and Indiana Tech, the Gray Wolves outscored the Crusaders 3-0 in the final 15 minutes and were outscored just 4-3 by the Warriors, with two of the goals allowed coming in the game's final minute.
