Lourdes Downs Concordia in Game One, Game Two Suspended

Box Score 1 Lourdes rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game one to defeat Concordia (Mich.) 6-5 on Friday, before the Cardinals turned the tables in game two, battling back from an 8-0 hole to pull even when the contest was suspended due to darkness after nine innings tied 8-8 at Cardinal Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"I thought our guys battled all day long," head coach Jeremy Snow said afterwards.  "We competed well and our bullpen gave us lots of good innings.  Unfortunately, in the end, we weren't able to put the second game away."

In the opener the Gray Wolves had to rally from an early hole.  Following back-to-back home runs by Jacob Maas and Will Harris, Concordia led 4-0 just five batters into the game.  The Lourdes bullpen came on in the second, and gave the Gray Wolves a chance to climb back into the game, allowing just one run over the next eight frames.

Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard in the third with a two-run home run to left, and George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) followed with a solo shot two batters later to pull the Gray Wolves within one.

Lourdes tied the game in the fourth on a Cardinal throwing error and took the lead one inning later.  Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) doubled home Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Bradshaw Mountain H.S.) and scored himself on a pinch-hit single by Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.), making it 6-4 Gray Wolves.

Concordia strung three consecutive two-out singles together in the seventh to score one run, and loaded the bases in the ninth, but Jake Tucker (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) came on to induce a groundball to end the game and record his first collegiate save.

Braxton McKart (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) earned the win (3-0) with four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two.  Jacob Cuso suffered the loss (4-1) for the Cardinals, allowing three runs and three hits in two innings of relief.

Pastor, Riggs, Gallo, and Michael Davis (Whittier, Calif./California H.S.) all had two hits in the opener for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes banged out 11 total hits.

In game two it was Lourdes that jumped out to the early lead, as Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right, that gave the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Gray Wolves appeared to break the game open in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the play while scoring seven times.  Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) singled home the first run of the inning before Cole Cantelon (Langley, B.C./Brookswood Secondary H.S.) drove home another with a fielder's choice.  With the bases loaded, Denman singled through the left side, and when the ball was kicked in the outfield, all three runners scored.  Stanley and Gallo both added RBI singles as well, giving Lourdes an 8-0 lead.

Harris homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth, putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard, starting a Cardinal rally.  Concordia batted around in the inning, as the first six batters reached base, and scored five times to pull within three.

The Cardinals added another run in the fifth, as Mass homered for the second time on the day.  Concordia completed the comeback in the ninth, with three straight two-out hits tying the game.  Blaine Milheim made a bid to win it with a home run, but Denman made the catch over the barrier.  Darkness then set in, forcing the suspension of the game.

Denman, Stanley, and Gallo all currently have two hits each for the Gray Wolves in game two.

Lourdes (16-17, 7-13) will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves head to Siena Heights.  The Gray Wolves and Saints will resume their suspended game from April 9 beginning at 4 p.m., with action beginning in the top of the 10th inning of a 4-4 tie.  The two schools will then follow with a non-conference game.
