Sunday, April 29, 1 p.m. EDT (DH)
Mercy Field - Toledo, Ohio
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Postseason implications are on the line this weekend for Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves close out the 2018 regular season with a three-game series against Rochester (Mich.). The Gray Wolves and Warriors will play a single game on Saturday before meeting on Sunday for a Senior Day doubleheader.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 45-92 (.328) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Matt York (RHP, 3-3, 4.64) is expected to be handed the baseball on Saturday to begin the weekend series with Rochester (Mich.).Â
Braxton McKart (RHP, 5-0, 6.35) is slated to take the hill in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, while the Gray Wolves have yet to decide on a game two starter.
Series Notes: Rochester (Mich.) holds a 7-6 series advantage against Lourdes dating back to March 18, 2012. The Gray Wolves have won four straight against the Warriors though, after sweeping last year's three-game series in Rochester Hills, Mich. 11-1, 10-1, and 20-9. Rochester holds a 6-2 series edge all-time at Mercy Field.
Wrapping Up Last Week: After scoring a run in the top of the 10th on Thursday, Lourdes saw Siena Heights rally with two in the bottom of the inning to defeat the Gray Wolves 6-5 in the completion of an April 9 suspended game. The Saints then won a non-conference game 11-9 despite a three-hit game from
Alec Thacker. Friday Lourdes scored four in the 11th on the way to winning a suspended game from Concordia (Mich.) 12-9.Â
Braxton McKart earned the win in relief. The Cardinals then won a non-conference game against Lourdes 9-2, with
George Pastor going 2-for-2 for the Gray Wolves in the loss.Â
Matt York tossed a complete game in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader against Aquinas as Lourdes posted a 5-1 victory.Â
Jay Denman went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in in the victory. The Saints took game two of the twinbill 10-3 with
Devin Stanley having a pair of hits for the Gray Wolves. McKart then tossed a complete game shutout on Sunday as Lourdes won the series finale from Aquinas 4-0.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the weekend having been swept in a doubleheader at home against Aquinas 5-2 and 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Rochester is batting .232 as a team this season, led by Ricky Rigg's .315 average with 20 runs batted in. The Warriors' pitching staff sports a 10.06 earned run average, led by Christopher Owen who is 1-6 with a 6.23 ERA. Opponents are batting .350 against Rochester this season.
Thanks Seniors: Lourdes will honor its five seniors between games of Sunday's doubleheader with Rochester (Mich.).Â
Dan Johnson,
Daniel Kruzel,
Dallas Riggs,
Devin Stanley, and
Matt York will be recognized for their contributions to the program over the past few seasons.
Chasing a Postseason Berth: Lourdes enters the final weekend looking to earn a berth in the WHAC tournament for the first time in program history. The Gray Wolves have several different routes in which they can qualify. By winning three games this weekend, Lourdes would then need Aquinas to lose one of their remaining five games. In addition, the Gray Wolves need one of the following three to occur: Cornerstone loses one of its three to Michigan-Dearborn, or Lawrence Tech to lose four of its remaining five games (Aquinas-2, Madonna-3), or Concordia to lose all six of its remaining games (Aquinas-3, Michigan-Dearborn-3). There are scenarios for Lourdes to make the tournament with fewer than three victories this week, but those involve more help from other schools.
Record-Setting Season: Lourdes has already set a new program record with 19 victories this season, surpassing the previous mark of 16 set in 2013 (16-27-1). The Gray Wolves are now trying to finish the regular season over .500 for the first time ever, and can accomplish the feat with a three-game sweep of Rochester (Mich.) this weekend.
Chasing .400: Jay Denman enters the final weekend of the regular season batting .394, a mark that ranks four in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Denman shares the team lead with
Dallas Riggs in hits, with 50 each, but Denman has 25 fewer at bats.
McKart Solid Down the Stretch: Braxton McKart has allowed just one run since March 18, a span of five appearances. McKart has pitched 22.1 innings, earning four victories, while scattering 14 total hits. The sophomore right-hander has struck out 14 and walked just seven in the five outings, which culminated with a complete game shutout over Aquinas on Sunday afternoon.
Heading for Third: Lourdes ranks fifth in the NAIA with 23 total triples this season. The Gray Wolves' 0.575 triples per game is the second best rate nationally.Â
Glen Crabtree is 10th in the country individually with six triples, most in the WHAC.
Playing Solid Defense: Dallas Riggs and
Dan Johnson have both been flawless defensively for the Gray Wolves in 2018. Riggs, who did not commit an error in the outfield as a sophomore in 2016, is looking to repeat the accomplishment his senior season. He has 106 chances without a miscue. Johnson is looking to cap a perfect year defensively behind the plate. He has zero errors in 183 chances, and has also thrown out 20-of-67 would-be base stealers.
This and That: George Pastor is the only Gray Wolf to appear in, and start, all 40 games this season ...
Glen Crabtree enters the weekend with a six-game hitting streak ...
Michael Davis has reached base safely in his last eight games.
