Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: For the first time in program history, Lourdes begins Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament action this week, as the Gray Wolves travel to Lima, Ohio for the opening round. Lourdes will face Madonna in game one prior to facing host Northwestern Ohio in the double elimination format.
Head Coach Jeremy Snow: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
Jeremy Snow has a 48-92 (.343) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves, as well as in his career as a collegiate head coach. He is the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Lourdes will send
Matt York (RHP, 4-3, 4.17) and
Braxton McKart (RHP, 6-0, 5.84) to the hill on Thursday on the opening day of tournament action. The Gray Wolves have not decided who will pitch against Madonna and who will face Northwestern Ohio yet. Future starters throughout the tournament will be determined on a game-by-game basis.
Series Notes: Madonna holds a 23-1 all-time series edge against the Gray Wolves dating back to March 31, 2012. The Crusaders swept a doubleheader against Lourdes earlier this season on March 26 in Livonia, Mich. by scores of 8-1 and 9-3. This will be the first neutral site game the two schools will have played. Northwestern Ohio is 20-2 all-time against Lourdes in a series which began March 28, 2012. The Racers swept this season's regular season series at Mercy Field March 30-31, winning by scores of 11-4, 8-7, and 16-7. UNOH holds a 12-1 series edge in games played in Lima, Ohio.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Matt York tossed a complete game victory on Saturday as the Gray Wolves defeated Rochester (Mich.) 4-1 to begin the weekend series.
George Pastor went 3-for-4 offensively while
Glen Crabtree drove home two runs. Lourdes had to rally in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth to earn an 11-10 victory over the Warriors.
Adam Hoyos earned the win in relief while
Jay Denman and
Colin Gottschalk each had three hits. Crabtree drove home three runs. The Gray Wolves completed the weekend sweep in game two with a 17-1 victory over Rochester.
Braxton McKart struck out nine in five innings to earn the win on the hill. Denman had three hits while Pastor drove home four runs for Lourdes in the tournament clinching victory.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the tournament having won two of three games against Lawrence Tech last weekend to conclude the regular season. Jalen Thomas is batting .404 with six home runs and 27 RBI while Jared Hagen is hitting .374 with 30 RBI. As a team Madonna is hitting .292 on the year. Tyler Butzin leads a pitching staff with his 7-3 record and 2.57 earned run average. Madonna's pitchers have a 4.16 ERA overall and opponents are batting .269 against them.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the tournament having won 10 consecutive games after sweeping a three-game non-conference series with Cleary last weekend. UNOH is hitting .323 as a team, led by Blake Maines .437 average with five home runs and 43 runs batted in. Jacak Barrie has a team-leading 10 homers. Olivier Mailloux leads the pitching staff with a 10-3 record and a 2.64 ERA. The staff as a whole sports a 4.53 earned run average while opponents are batting .255 against the Racers.
First Postseason Appearance: Lourdes is making its first trip to the WHAC tournament in school history this weekend in the program's seventh season of baseball. Lourdes highest previous finish in the WHAC standings was seventh in 2014 prior to the sixth place effort this year.
York Earns Pitcher of the Week Honors: Matt York was named the final WHAC Pitcher of the Week for the season after tossing a complete game on Saturday against Rochester (Mich.). The senior right-hander allowed just one run and nine hits while striking out nine to earn his second league honor of the season.
Record-Setting Season: Lourdes has already set a new program record with 22 victories this season, surpassing the previous mark of 16 set in 2013 (16-27-1). The Gray Wolves need one victory in the WHAC tournament to assure themselves of their first .500 season in program history.
Chasing .400: Jay Denman enters the tournament batting .409, a mark that ranks third in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Denman leads the team in hits (56), doubles (14), home runs (7), and steals (9) in addition to average.
McKart Solid Down the Stretch: Braxton McKart has allowed just two runs since March 18, a span of six appearances. McKart has pitched 27.1 innings, earning five victories, while scattering 18 total hits in the span. The sophomore right-hander has struck out 23 and walked just 10 in the six outings.
Heading for Third: Lourdes ranks third in the NAIA with 26 total triples this season. The Gray Wolves' 0.605 triples per game is the best rate nationally.
Glen Crabtree is 10th in the country individually with six triples, most in the WHAC.
This and That: George Pastor is the only Gray Wolf to appear in, and start, all 43 games this season ... Pastor enters the tournament with a seven-game hitting streak ...
