Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After playing a majority of the first half of the season on the road, Lourdes returns to Wildcat Stadium this week for a pair of contests, as the Gray Wolves play six of their final eight matches at home. Â Lourdes will entertain Cleary on Wednesday evening before hosting Aquinas on Saturday night.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over the Lourdes men's soccer program prior to the start of the 2019 season as just the second head coach in program history. Â Johnson sports a 78-91-8 (.463) record overall beginning his 10th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 3-7 (.300) mark at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cleary have split their four previous meetings in a series that began Sept. 12, 2015. Â The Cougars have won the last two contests, including a 3-1 victory in Howell, Mich. last season. Â The two sides have each won one previous match at Wildcat Stadium. Â Aquinas holds a 2-1-1 series edge against Lourdes dating back to Oct. 21, 2015. Â Last year the Saints were 2-1 victors over the Gray Wolves in Grand Rapids, Mich. Â Lourdes won the only previous meeting at Wildcat Stadium, a 2-1 result in 2017.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Indiana Tech found the back of the net just over 37 minutes into the match and added two goals just over a minute apart in the second half on the way to a 3-0 victory over the Gray Wolves on Wednesday. Â
Ali Chokr made seven saves in net for Lourdes. Â The Gray Wolves rebounded on Saturday with a 3-0 victory at Rochester (Mich.). Â
Darius Passley-Bennett scored all three goals for Lourdes in the win while Chokr made four saves to earn the shutout.
Scouting Cleary: The Cougars snapped a three-match losing skid on Saturday with a 4-2 victory at Michigan-Dearborn. Â David Tetaj leads Cleary with five goals and 11 total points while Benjamin Delage and Marcel Zanchin have two goals and five points each. Â Johnny Cabral has a team-high two assists. Â In goal, Juan Gomez has played the majority of the minutes for the Cougars, sporting a 1.94 goals against average and a .630 save percentage.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the week following a scoreless draw against 17th-ranked Northwestern Ohio on Saturday. Â Bailley Whalley leads Aquinas with eight goals and 16 points while Franco Calabrese has scored twice, has seven points, and shares the team lead with Fin Pittock with three assists each. Â Antonio Strassioto has played all but 61 minutes between the posts for the Saints, notching a 1.66 goals against average and a .773 save percentage.
Passley-Bennett Records Another Hat Trick: Darius Passley-Bennett notched his second hat trick of the season on Saturday against Rochester (Mich.), accounting for all three of the Gray Wolf goals. Â Passley-Bennett also had a hat trick in his Lourdes debut on Sept. 12 against Andrews, and is the first Gray Wolf in program history to record two hat tricks in his career. Â The junior's six goals this season lead Lourdes.
Chokr Earns Clean Sheet: Ali Chokr registered his second shutout of the season against Rochester (Mich.), making four saves on Saturday. Â It was his second clean sheet of the season, having also earned one at Ohio Christian on Aug. 27. Â Chokr now has four career shutouts to his credit, second on the Gray Wolf all-time list, trailing just
Jose Cedillo, who notched seven clean sheets from 2015-2017.
Ready for a Homestand: After playing seven of its first 10 matches away from home, Lourdes returns home to Wildcat Stadium for six of its final eight contests beginning on Wednesday against Cleary. Â The Gray Wolves have a pair of three-match homestands surrounding their lone remaining road trip. Â
Handing Out Assists: Josh Varney dished out his third assist of the season against Rochester (Mich.). Â The freshman now shares the team lead with
N'Faly Diallo, who handed out all three of his helpers in the same match against Andrews. Â
Playing Lots of Matches: Lourdes has three players that have appeared in at least 40 matches all-time for the Gray Wolves. Â Senior
Reece Riccardi has set the school mark with 49 career appearances, while his 39 starts are tied with
Judah Goodridge (2015-2017) for most in Lourdes history. Â
Tyler Rogers and
Olawole Ogunsanya have both stepped onto the field 40 times, tied for fifth most ever at Lourdes.
Scoring Records: Reece Riccardi has passed Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for third place alone in Lourdes history with his nine career goals. He also is passed
Adilson Darosa (2015, 2017) for third all-time with 21 career points. In his first season at Lourdes,
Darius Passley-Bennett has already moved into a tie with Isamnia Cohen (2016) for seventh all-time with his six goals this year.
More in the Record Books: Reece Riccardi ranks fourth in school history with 59 career shot attempts while
Farouk Amoo is seventh with his 41 career shots. Â
Tyler Rogers also ranks in the top-10 on the all-time shot list, having taken 39 total attempts, eighth most at Lourdes.
Captain: Reece Riccardi will serve as the Gray Wolves lone captain for the 2019 season. This will mark his second season in a leadership role for the Gray Wolves.
This and That: Lourdes has had 19 different players draw starting assignments this season ... every field player that has stepped on the pitch has attempted at least one shot ... eight of the Gray Wolves' 11 goals have come in the second half ... Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 143-111 this year.
