Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: Lourdes opens the home portion of the 2019 schedule on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves entertain Taylor. The contest is also the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for each school.
Head Coach Patrick Yannarelli: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Patrick Yannarelli has a 54-25 (.684) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Yannarelli was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 2016. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Taylor are meeting on the field in men's lacrosse for the first time ever on Saturday.
Wrapping Up Last Week (Or Two Weeks Ago): The Gray Wolves dropped their first game of the season, 8-7, at Missouri Baptist on March 9.
Nick Johnson scored three times while
Tyler Hart made 10 saves in goal. Lourdes bounced back on March 11 with a 9-3 neutral site victory over Saint Mary (Kan.) in Saint Louis, Mo.
Blake Alexander scored four times for the Gray Wolves while Hart made six stops in the cage. Lourdes was also awarded a forfeit victory over Cleary on March 20 after the Cougars' cancelled their season.
Scouting Taylor: The Trojans have opened the season with a pair of victories, but have been idle since a March 9 triumph over Clarke 16-11. Tyler Gerig leads Taylor with 13 goals and five assists for 18 total points while Josiah Peterson has added 10 goals. Ian McClain has handed out a team-leading nine assists. In goal, Kyle Mongoven has played every minute, sporting a .613 save percentage and a 6.00 goals against average.
Lourdes in Home Openers: The Gray Wolves are 4-1 all-time in home openers, including a 3-0 mark at Wildcat Stadium. Last season, Lourdes opened the home campaign with a 14-3 triumph over Montreat. The Gray Wolves' lone setback in a home opener came in 2015, an 18-13 loss to Dayton in a game played at Central Catholic High School.
Gray Wolves in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 2-1 opening Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2016. The Gray Wolves downed Indiana Tech 14-13 in the first WHAC game ever in 2016 before beginning 2017 with a 19-1 triumph at Madonna. Last season, Lourdes suffered a 7-4 setback at Siena Heights to begin the league slate.
Hart Solid in Goal: Tyler Hart has been the backbone of the Gray Wolf defense during his rookie season. The netminder sports a 6.67 goals against average and a .545 save percentage playing 225 of the 240 minutes this year. Hart has allowed eight goals or fewer in three of the four contests this year.
A National Ranking: Lourdes has moved into the NAIA top-10 coaches poll after its 3-1 start. The Gray Wolves are ranked ninth nationally in the latest poll. The last time Lourdes was nationally ranked was March 27, 2018 when the Gray Wolves were tied for seventh.
Scoring Leaders: A pair of newcomers,
Nick Johnson and
Blake Alexander, have paced the Lourdes offense this year. Johnson, a freshman, has scored 11 times and has a team-leading 14 points while Alexander, a redshirt-sophomore, has 10 goals and 13 points.
Winning Faceoffs: Lourdes has won 56.2% of its faceoffs this season, with Colin Miller winning 27 of his 47 (57.4%) draws. Miller also has a team-leading 26 ground balls this year.
This and That: Lourdes is 19-6 all-time at home, including 14-3 at Wildcat Stadium ... eight different Gray Wolves have found the back of the cage this year ... Lourdes is clearing at an 82.5% clip ... the Gray Wolves have surrendered just six man-up goals in 17 opportunities to the opposition ... the win over Cleary is the second forfeit victory in program history, the other coming over Carnegie Melon in 2014.
