Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: The 2019 regular season comes to a close this week, and with it comes the race to earn a postseason bid. Lourdes closes out the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday, entertaining Madonna on Senior Day before heading to Michigan-Dearborn for the season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Patrick Yannarelli: In his sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Patrick Yannarelli has a 56-29 (.659) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Yannarelli was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 2016. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Madonna and Lourdes have split their two meetings 1-1 in a series that began March 17, 2017. The Crusaders won last year's contest 12-11 at Wildcat Stadium in the only previous game played in Sylvania. Lourdes holds a 4-1 all-time advantage against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to March 16, 2014. The Wolverines won last year's contest 12-11 at Wildcat Stadium. Lourdes is 3-0 against Michigan-Dearborn all-time at Detroit Country Day School.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes battled back from a three-goal fourth quarter deficit, but Siena Heights scored the game-winner with one tick remaining on the clock in the extra session to defeat the Gray Wolves 10-9 on Wednesday.
Chad Causley,
Danny Benson, and
Cory Campbell each scored twice for Lourdes in the loss. On Saturday, Indiana Tech held off a fourth quarter rally to defeat the Gray Wolves 9-6.
Nick Johnson and Causley each had two tallies for Lourdes.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 14-12 loss at Aquinas on Saturday. Anthony Salamone and Harry Dyson lead Madonna with 36 goals each, with Salamone adding 12 assists for a team-high 48 points. Cole Gingell has handed out a team-leading 20 assists on the year. Zachary Beam has 101 ground balls and has won 64.5% of his faceoffs while in goal, Tyler Dohmeier has played a majority of the minutes, sporting an 8.39 goals against average and a .562 save percentage.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines enter the final game of the season on Saturday having dropped six straight games after falling 15-10 at Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday. Devon Callaghan leads Michigan-Dearborn with 30 goals and 36 total points on the year while Ben Phillips has handed out a team-high 10 assists. Dillon Beal has 104 ground balls this season and has won faceoffs at a 55.8% clip. In goal, Jay Rupnow and Liam Turner have split time. Rupnow sports a 14.00 goals against average and a .541 save percentage while Turner has a 18.30 GAA and a .427 save mark.
Thanks Seniors: Lourdes will honor its two seniors, Colin O'Loughlin and
Ian Paige, prior to the home finale on Wednesday. O'Loughlin has played in 35 games over three seasons with the Gray Wolves while Paige has made 38 appearances in his four-year career.
Fighting for a Tournament Berth: Lourdes needs at least one victory in its final two games to earn a spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament which begins on April 23. The top six teams in the final standings earn postseason berths, with the top two seeds earning byes into the semifinals. The first round will see the third and fourth seeds hosting the sixth and fifth seeds respectively.
Record-Setting Pace: Tyler Hart currently is on pace to set the school's single season goals against average record (minimum 350 minutes). He enters the week with a 7.65 GAA, just ahead of
Jared Huiskens' 2018 mark of 7.67.
This and That: Lourdes is 3-3 all-time in overtime games, with three of the six contests coming against Siena Heights ...
Jake Noel (62.1%) and
Collin Miller (61.4%) currently rank one-two on the all-time faceoff percentage list ... the Gray Wolves are 11-11 all-time against NAIA top-10 foes, including 1-2 this season.
