Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After suffering a heart-breaking double-overtime loss in the season opener, Lourdes returns to the pitch this week for a pair of matches, including the home opener. Â The Gray Wolves travel to Ohio Christian on Tuesday evening before entertaining Indiana East on Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over the Lourdes men's soccer program prior to the start of the 2019 season as just the second head coach in program history. Â Johnson sports a 75-85-8 (.470) record overall beginning his 10th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 0-1 (.000) mark at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Ohio Christian are meeting on the pitch in men's soccer for the first time ever on Tuesday night. Â Lourdes leads the all-time series against Indiana East 1-0-1 dating back to 2017. Â The Gray Wolves won last year's contest 1-0 on the road behind an early second half goal from
Osbaldo Senderos. Â Lourdes and Indiana East tied their first meeting, 1-1, at Wildcat Stadium.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes and Taylor battled into the second overtime scoreless before the Trojans netted the match-winner on a restart with 6:53 remaining to earn the victory on Tuesday evening in the Gray Wolves' season opener. Â
Jorge Mendoza made three stops in goal for Lourdes while
Farouk Amoo led the team with four shot attempts.
Scouting Ohio Christian: The Trailblazers open their 2019 season hosting Lourdes on Tuesday. Â Ohio Christian posted a 5-12 record in 2018, including a 2-7 mark in the River States Conference, finishing in eighth place. Â Kyle Luneke returns to lead the Trailblazer offense after leading the team with nine goals and 18 points last season. Â Bryce Hull added six goals and three assists for 15 points. Â In goal, Ohio Christian has a pair of freshmen netminders this season, Trenton Tichnell and Noah Murphy.
Scouting Indiana East: The Red Wolves opened the 2019 season at home on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Shawnee State. Â Gustavo Ferrari scored a goal and added an assist while Pedro Ferro tallied the match-winner for Indiana East. Â Dumi Kumwenda also handed out an assist. Â Aaron Gipson went the distance in goal, earning the win for the Red Wolves, making seven saves.
Lourdes in Home Openers: Lourdes enters the season 1-2-1 all-time in their home openers. Â The Gray Wolves will look to snap a two-match winless streak in home openers on Saturday after falling to Bethel (Ind.) 3-0 in last year's first contest. Â The lone home-opening win came in 2016, 3-1 over Grace Bible.
Overtime Becoming a Norm in Season Openers: Lourdes season opener went to overtime for the third time in five seasons last Tuesday at Taylor. Â The Gray Wolves are now 1-1-1 when playing more than 90 minutes of soccer in their season debut.
Mendoza Solid in Goal: Jorge Mendoza had solid Lourdes debut last Tuesday between the posts. Â The redshirt-freshman made three saves and kept the match scoreless until the second overtime. Â The lone goal he allowed was on a quick restart following a foul outside the box.
Newcomers Make Their Debuts: Lourdes had four players draw starting assignments in their debuts with the Gray Wolves. Â
Jorge Mendoza started in goal as a redshirt-freshman while true freshmen
Lucas Bosch,
Kevin Gonzalez, and
Josh Varney also earned a start against Taylor. Â Transfer
Ben Noud came off the bench for the Gray Wolves to make his first appearance in a Lourdes uniform as well.
Playing Lots of Matches: Lourdes has three players that enter the season having appeared in at least 30 matches all-time for the Gray Wolves. Â Senior
Reece Riccardi ranks fourth all-time in program history having played in 41 contests, six shy of
Akilla Arno's (2015-2017) school record of 48. Â Riccardi's 34 starts also rank fourth in Lourdes history. Â
Tyler Rogers and
Olawole Ogunsanya have both stepped onto the field 31 times, tied for 10th most ever at Lourdes.
In the Record Book: Reece Riccardi is tied with Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for third in Lourdes history with his eight career goals. He also is tied with Amirally for fourth all-time with 19 career points. Riccardi's 50 career shot attempts are fifth most ever at Lourdes while
Tyler Rogers is tied for 10th with 31 career shots.
Non-Conference Success: Â Lourdes has played well during non-conference action having posted a 10-10-1 all-time mark outside the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Captain: Reece Riccardi will serve as the Gray Wolves lone captain for the 2019 season. This will mark his second season in a leadership role for the Gray Wolves.
This and That: Lourdes is 12-22-1 all-time in road matches and 9-17-4 at Wildcat Stadium ... the Gray Wolves have never played a neutral site match in program history ... Lourdes is 1-4-5 when playing overtime, and is winless since the program's inaugural match at Grace Bible (Aug. 28, 2015).
