Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes returns to Wildcat Stadium for its final home non-conference match of the season on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Andrews. Â On Monday, Lourdes begins a stretch in which the Gray Wolves will play four of their next five matches away from home, traveling to Shawnee State.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over the Lourdes men's soccer program prior to the start of the 2019 season as just the second head coach in program history. Â Johnson sports a 76-87-8 (.468) record overall beginning his 10th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 1-3 (.250) mark at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Lourdes has won both of the previous meetings against Andrews in a series that began Sept. 1, 2016. Â The Gray Wolves won the initial meeting in Berrien Springs, Mich. 9-1 before downing the Cardinals at Wildcat Stadium 9-0 on Sept. 17, 2017 in the last contest between the two schools and the only previous match played in Sylvania. Â Lourdes and Shawnee State will be meeting for the first time on Monday night.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Goshen scored the lone goal of the match with 6:15 remaining in the first half last Wednesday (Sept. 4) as the Maple Leafs defeated the Gray Wolves 1-0 in Goshen, Ind. Â Goshen outshot Lourdes 11-8 for the match, including 7-3 on goal. Â
Jorge Mendoza made six saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Andrews: The Cardinals have dropped two straight matches after falling 1-0 at Grace Christian on Tuesday evening. Â David Avelar leads Andrews with five goals and three assists for 13 total points this season while Gabriel Palacios has added three goals and two helpers for eight points. Â In goal, Marcelo Mansur has played all 360 minutes for the Cardinals, and sports a 1.75 goals against average and a .800 save percentage.
Scouting Shawnee State: The Bears enter the week having won three straight matches following a 4-0 shutout win at Bluffton on Saturday (Sept. 7). Â Shawnee State hosts West Virginia Tech on Wednesday and travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday before entertaining Lourdes. Â Kevin de Lange leads the Bears in scoring with six goals and three assists for 15 total points. Â Bruno Rovares has eight points with three tallies and two helpers. Â In goal, Kade Tomlinson has played all 365 minutes thus far this season and sports a 1.48 goals against average and a .793 save percentage.
Low Scoring Affairs: Lourdes has been involved in numerous low scoring matches thus far this season, with three of the contests resulting in 1-0 decisions. Â The Gray Wolves have scored just three times this season, but the defense has been stingy, yielding just five goals in the four matches.
Amoo Early Scoring Leader: Farouk Amoo has scored two of the three goals for the Gray Wolves this season, tallying four total points. Â One of his two tallies was the match-winner for the Gray Wolves at Ohio Christian.
Unlucky in Overtime: Lourdes has already played a pair of overtime matches this season, falling to both Taylor and Indiana East when extended beyond 90 minutes. Â All-time, the Gray Wolves are 1-4-6 in overtime matches, with the lone victory coming on Aug. 28, 2015 at Grace Bible in the first match in program history.
Solid Goalkeeping: Lourdes has three goalkeepers on the roster this season, and all three have seen action in the first four matches. Â
Jorge Mendoza has started two matches and sports a 0.93 goals against average and a .818 save percentage. Â
Ali Chokr made eight stops in a clean sheet at Ohio Christian while
Garrett Baxley made his 2019 debut against Indiana East, yielding three goals while making three saves in an overtime effort.
Playing Lots of Matches: Lourdes has three players that have appeared in at least 30 matches all-time for the Gray Wolves. Â Senior
Reece Riccardi is tied for third all-time in program history having played in 45 contests, three shy of
Akilla Arno's (2015-2017) school record of 48. Â Riccardi's 37 starts also are tied for third in Lourdes history. Â
Tyler Rogers and
Olawole Ogunsanya have both stepped onto the field 34 times, tied for eighth most ever at Lourdes.
In the Record Book: Reece Riccardi has passed Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for third place alone in Lourdes history with his nine career goals. He also is passed
Adilson Darosa (2015, 2017) for third all-time with 21 career points. Riccardi's 55 career shot attempts are fourth most ever at Lourdes while
Tyler Rogers is tied for 10th with 31 career shots.
Captain: Reece Riccardi will serve as the Gray Wolves lone captain for the 2019 season. This will mark his second season in a leadership role for the Gray Wolves.
