Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After playing its home opener last weekend, Lourdes returns to the road on Wednesday evening to continue non-conference play as the Gray Wolves face Goshen. Â Following the match, Lourdes will have eight days off before returning home to Wildcat Stadium.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over the Lourdes men's soccer program prior to the start of the 2019 season as just the second head coach in program history. Â Johnson sports a 76-86-8 (.471) record overall beginning his 10th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 1-2 (.333) mark at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Goshen won the only previous meeting against Lourdes, a 6-1 decision at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 8, 2018. Â The Maple Leafs scored the first six goals of the match before
Savio Adams scored with one second remaining in regulation to break up the shutout. Â This will be Lourdes first trip to Goshen, Ind.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes registered its first victory of the season on Tuesday evening with a 1-0 triumph at Ohio Christian. Â
Farouk Amoo scored the Gray Wolves' first goal of the season, which proved to be the match-winner while
Ali Chokr made eight saves on the way to recording the shutout. Â In Saturday's home opener against Indiana East, the Red Wolves built a 2-0 second half lead before Lourdes battled back to force overtime. Â
Reece Riccardi connected on a penalty kick before Amoo scored with 11:53 left in regulation to knot the match at two. Â Indiana East scored the match-winner just 38 seconds into the extra session though to end the contest.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs are still looking for their first victory of the season after falling 4-0 at home to Robert Morris (Ill.) on Saturday evening. Â Goshen is playing its third of four Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foes on Wednesday when it hosts Lourdes. Â Lucas Bontreger leads Goshen with three points on the year, having scored a goal and added an assist. Â Matt Granitz and Henrique Eichenberger have the other two tallies for the Maple Leafs while Felipe Gallo has handed out an assist. Â In goal, Tomas Fonseca has played all 372 minutes for Goshen and sports a 2.66 goals against average and a .686 save percentage.
Chokr Earns WHAC Honors: Ali Chokr earned the second Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career after posting a shutout against Ohio Christian. Â The sophomore netminder made eight saves in his clean sheet effort against the Trailblazers to notch the 1-0 victory. Â Chokr also earned the WHAC honor as a freshman following the first week of the season.
Amoo Nets a Pair: After missing most of the 2018 season due to injury,
Farouk Amoo has made the most of his opportunities already this year for the Gray Wolves. Â The redshirt-junior has scored in each of the last two contests for Lourdes, beginning with the match-winner at Ohio Christian. Â Amoo then tied the match at two, forcing overtime against Indiana East. Â Amoo also leads the Gray Wolves with 11 total shot attempts this year after registering just six total in 2018 when he played in just two matches.
Riccardi Connects on a Penalty Kick: Reece Riccardi stepped up to the penalty spot and connected for the Gray Wolves' first goal of the match against Indiana East. Â Riccardi is now 2-for-2 in his career taking penalty kicks for Lourdes, having also made one successfully in 2017.
Unlucky in Overtime: Lourdes has already played a pair of overtime matches this season, falling to both Taylor and Indiana East when extended beyond 90 minutes. Â All-time, the Gray Wolves are 1-4-6 in overtime matches, with the lone victory coming on Aug. 28, 2015 at Grace Bible in the first match in program history.
Rotating Goalkeepers: Lourdes has three goalkeepers on the roster this season, and all three have earned a start through the first three contests. Â
Jorge Mendoza started the opener, allowing one goal while making three saves at Taylor. Â
Ali Chokr followed, making eight stops in a clean sheet at Ohio Christian while
Garrett Baxley made his 2019 debut against Indiana East, yielding three goals while making three saves in an overtime effort.
Playing Lots of Matches: Lourdes has three players that enter the season having appeared in at least 30 matches all-time for the Gray Wolves. Â Senior
Reece Riccardi ranks fourth all-time in program history having played in 44 contests, four shy of
Akilla Arno's (2015-2017) school record of 48. Â Riccardi's 36 starts also rank fourth in Lourdes history. Â
Tyler Rogers and
Olawole Ogunsanya have both stepped onto the field 33 times, tied for eighth most ever at Lourdes.
In the Record Book: Reece Riccardi has passed Haggi Amirally (2016-2017) for third place alone in Lourdes history with his nine career goals. He also is passed
Adilson Darosa (2015, 2017) for third all-time with 21 career points. Riccardi's 55 career shot attempts are fourth most ever at Lourdes while
Tyler Rogers is tied for 10th with 31 career shots.
Non-Conference Success: Â Lourdes has played well during non-conference action having posted a 11-11-1 all-time mark outside the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Captain: Reece Riccardi will serve as the Gray Wolves lone captain for the 2019 season. This will mark his second season in a leadership role for the Gray Wolves.
