Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes takes to the road for the final time during the fall schedule this Saturday as the Gray Wolves travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia (Mich.) in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action. The Gray Wolves are looking to complete a fall sweep of the Cardinals after downing them in non-conference action last month.
Head Coach Matt Johnson: Matt Johnson took over as the second head coach in program's history prior to the 2019 season. Johnson sports an 84-100-8 (.458) record overall in his 11th season as a men's collegiate soccer coach and has a 9-16 (.360) mark in his second year at Lourdes.
Series Notes: Concordia (Mich.) leads the all-time series against Lourdes 4-2 dating back to Oct. 14, 2015. The Gray Wolves snapped a four-match losing skid in the series back on Sept. 26 with a 1-0 victory at Wildcat Stadium in a non-conference match. The Cardinals hold a 2-1 series edge against Lourdes in Ann Arbor, Mich. with the schools last meeting at Concordia in 2018.
Wrapping Up Last Week: In a high-scoring affair, Lawrence Tech scored the match-winning goal with just under 15 minutes remaining to defeat Lourdes 4-3 in Southfield, Mich. last Saturday night.
Amin Elbashir and
Farouk Amoo both scored in the first half for the Gray Wolves as the match was knotted at two at intermission.
Anthony Samuel's goal in the second half time the contest at three before Lawrence Tech scored the match-winner.
Ali Chokr made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have been idle since Oct. 14 when Concordia posted a 2-0 victory on the road at Siena Heights. Brett Kuhlman has scored twice for Concordia this season while Nyle Ellis has the team's other goal. Austin Corona and Jordan Whitt each have drawn assists. Ryan Webb has played all 360 minutes in goal sporting a .806 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average while posting a pair of shutouts.
In the First Meeting: Brendon Long scored the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick with 18 minutes remaining as Lourdes downed Concordia (Mich.) 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 26.
Ali Chokr made three saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Gray Wolves while Ryan Webb made eight stops for the Cardinals. Lourdes outshot Concordia 18-9 on the night, including 9-3 on goal.
A Rare Double: This marks just the second time in program history that Lourdes has faced the same opponent twice in the same season. The Gray Wolves played Marygrove twice in 2015, the team's inaugural season. Lourdes lost twice to the Mustangs, once in the regular season and once in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
Looking to Return to .500: Lourdes is looking to get back to .500 the latest in a season since the Gray Wolves were 6-6-1 after 13 games during the 2016 season.
New Gray Wolf Scorers: Amin Elbashir and
Anthony Samuel both scored their first goals in a Lourdes uniform at Lawrence Tech. Both players are transfers who had yet to score for the Gray Wolves during their first season. They are the fifth and sixth different goal scorers for Lourdes this year.
First Half Offense: Lourdes has scored nine of its 12 goals during the first 45 minutes of the match thus far this year. After tallying two goals at Lawrence Tech, the Gray Wolves have scored multiple first half goals in three matches this season.
Chokr Matches School Shutout Mark: Ali Chokr tied the Lourdes record with his seventh career shutout against Cornerstone earlier this fall, matching the mark set by
Jose Cedillo (2015-2017). Chokr had two clean sheets as a freshman, three last year, and already has a pair in four starts this season.
Elsewhere on the All-Time Charts: Ali Chokr also ranks second in program history in minutes played in goal, saves, and goals against average. Chokr enters this week's action with 152 career saves, 22 shy of
Jose Cedillo's (2015-2017) mark of 174 and his 1.98 career goals against average just trails Cedillo's all-time mark of 1.69. Chokr is also approximately 550 minutes shy of Cedillo's minutes played mark of 3192:12.
Moving Into the Top-10: With his goal against Lawrence Tech,
Farouk Amoo has joined teammate
Savio Adams in a tie for eighth all-time in scoring along with Isamnia Coehn (2016). The trio have all scored six career goals with the Gray Wolves.
Lots of Experience: Olawole Ogunsanya moved into second place alone in program history having appeared in 49 career matches after drawing a starting assignment in the season opener at Point Park. He trails only
Reece Riccardi (2016-2019), who appeared in 57 matches, on the Gray Wolves' all-time list.
Jose Silveira has moved into seventh all-time for the Gray Wolves, having stepped onto the pitch 44 times for Lourdes, one behind
Judah Goodridge's (2015-2017) sixth place mark.
Brendon Long has moved into a second place all-time at Lourdes having made 41 career starts, joining Goodridge. Riccardi holds the starts record as well with 48.
A Different Look This Season: Due to COVID-19, five schools in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference have opted to not play soccer this fall, moving all of their matches to the spring. The remaining seven league schools will play a split season, competing in five WHAC matches in the fall and six in the spring. The WHAC tournament and NAIA National Championships will take place in the spring.
Team Captains: Lourdes has tri-captains for the 2020 season. Serving in the Gray Wolves' leadership role are seniors
Savio Adams and
Jose Silveira along with junior
Cameron Poslaiko. All three are first time captains for Lourdes.
This and That: Lourdes has had 26 different players step foot on the pitch already this year ... 18 different players have drawn a starting assignment ... after five overtime matches in 2019, Lourdes has yet to play more than 90 minutes this season.
